This afternoon, the prominent newspaper published an article making a surprising claim about exobiology: that watermelons had been discovered on Mars.
The article disappeared after about an hour, replaced by a message saying it had been “published in error.”
Needless to say, there is no currently-available evidence of watermelons, or any other life, on the Red Planet.
However, several NASA missions and a rover sent by China are all investigating the possibility of ancient life on our planetary neighbor, and scientists say it is possible that microbial life still lives there, likely deep under the surface.
If there’s any evidence of fresh produce on the Red Planet, though, it’s not yet public.

They are actually a weird alien race of people
These days, we have plenty of weird without needing the alien part.

It was not published by the Onion, nor Babylon Bee. Not even by Not the Bee.
I don’t know whether this say more about the lack of editorial content at the NYT or journalistic credibility.
I can’t wait to see all the Meme’s on social media. I would wager that some of them will be quite politically incorrect.

I told them it was cantaloupes.

So, the great watermelon coverup begins.

Perhaps someone will hack the NY times and sneak in a few truthful articles.

No watermelons? What about cantaloupe and all the other melons? Surely there must be one variety?

“In other words, it sounds as though the article appeared as some sort of content management system test that was accidentally made public.”
Find a lot of these across the net with website software content feature samples. All just “obvious” bogus fake stories used as examples of how pages can be laid out and organized with their software.

Given their history, if someone slipped in a truthful article, it would appear to be propaganda because it would be so out of character for the NY Times...

In the book “Hitchhikers in Space” there was a planet that was populated with Lawyers, hairdressers and other such people who were deemed useless and burdensome by their home planet..
They were told that they were being sent there first so they could set everything up and the new planet would be ready for habitation when everyone else got there..
But, of course it was just a ruse, a way to get rid of those who were a drag on their society.. Which, by the way, is beginning to look like a pretty good idea.... :)
