Princeton University will no longer require students to take Latin or ancient Greek to earn a classics degree, a change that comes as part of a larger effort “to address systemic racism” on campus.
Princeton faculty approved the elimination of the Classic’s Department’s “classics track,” which required students to have an intermediate proficiency in one of the two languages before entering the track.
Classics professor Josh Billings, director for undergraduate studies, said faculty believe the change will improve the Classics Department because it will add “new perspectives” to it.
“Having people who come in who might not have studied classics in high school and might not have had a previous exposure to Greek and Latin, we think that having those students in the department will make it a more vibrant intellectual community,” Billings said.
The changes were given “new urgency” because of Princeton President Christopher Eisgruber’s call to “to address systemic racism.”

The only institutional/systemic racism/sexism in the USA is the legislated racism/sexism against straight, white males known as “affirmative action.”
Because banning things always makes it more vibrant.
A study of Latin and Greek is essential for understanding English.
Nothing says classics like not studying the classics
Right. Who needs to study the basis of our language and political structures? Pshaw. Buncha dead white guys. Think how much better off we will be when we are run like the average African country.
Ilegitmus non carborundum!
Stupid people don’t know history, and uneducated people can be propagandized in anything.
Then how are you a classics major?
Cogito ergo........ you know the thing.
Gee...isn’t teaching “classics” now racist in itself?
Seems racist to claim blacks are too stupid to study something so drop it completely.
Princeton could add Igbo and Bantu to help to address systemic racism on campus.
Right. And how are you going to read Plato and Cicero in the original Greek and Latin? Tacitus anyone? How can anyone study classical antiquity without knowing the languages?
Are there going to be no more translations?
You can’t be a Classics scholar without Greek and/or Latin!!!! All you can be is a dilettante!
And if you also have the “woke” ideology, all you can be is a deluded dilettante!!!!
At least most Greek Orthodox Churches use the Greek language in major portions of their liturgies!
Homines stulti est.
I’m genuinely surprised they didn’t replace them with ebonics.
Dumbing down the curriculum.
Yeah, that is the answer. [/s]
How’s ‘bout they study Ebonics or didn’t anybody “ax” them?
