In the Name of Equity, California Will Discourage Students Who Are Gifted at Math
Reason ^

All students deserve powerful mathematics; we reject ideas of natural gifts and talents," reads a bulletpoint in chapter one of the framework. "The belief that 'I treat everyone the same' is insufficient: Active efforts in mathematics teaching are required in order to counter the cultural forces that have led to and continue to perpetuate current inequities."

The entire second chapter of the framework is about connecting math to social justice concepts like bias and racism:

To the looney left there is a huge distinction between “equity” and “equality.” “Equity” is code for fighting structural racism and white supremacy with Marxist means. Math is now another front in their never ending war against civilization.

I remember the movie Stand and Deliver (starring Edward James Olmos). It was about Latino students learning advanced mathematics. The protagonist of the movie was an all star teacher at odds with establishment educator’s low expectations. The teacher would probably be cancelled today because of his white supremacist mentality.

I’m sure between the private sector and the internet, no one will be able to find a way to help the gifted students.

Who by the way are undoubtedly more intelligent than 99% of the teachers who work for the California public school system.

“All students deserve powerful mathematics; we reject ideas of natural gifts and talents”

They reject the idea that there is any sort of genetic variation in kids which may result in different ability levels.

That is spot-on assessment of the mission.

However, tho this likely will reduce competition somewhat, being truly “gifted” in math is not something that can be bought or learned...

Yeah, and "freedom" means "give me free stuff."

At what level does it become too abstract to understand?

Well, personally, for me the level was Algebra. Fortunately, our two daughters took after their father in math aptitude.

And those parents who want their chilluns to exploit their talents will naturally go to schools that provide that stimulus.

Translation: “Shove it publik skoolz, we want a REAL education for our chidren.”

And NEA, shove it up your uneducated Obamaholes. Wipe things off with your worthless eddikashun degrees. Rinse, repeat.

If you toss an unprepared person into a class and dont explain the concepts or provide something to visualize, then it can be overwhelming. Failure to learn is often failure to teach. That could start at the parenting stage, and/or be poor presentation technique by the teacher.

This is why China is beating us. We reject clear reality and replace it with a bunch of nonsense. We fail to deliver on any big project because we sabotage any chance at success. We sit still trying to make the present into the ideal.

Meanwhile, they just buckle down and get stuff done, working diligently and cohesively toward a shared vision of power and control.

The sooner we recognize this, come back to reality, and start working to better America, the sooner we can fix the situation. But the longer we sit here paralyzed by nonsense like the above, the harder it’s going to be to stay ahead of China in the future.

Again these words come to mind...
THE GOLDEN BOUGH by Frasier
Part 8
XXVII. Succession to the Soul

“With such examples before us we need not hesitate to
believe that many tribes have felt no scruple or delicacy in
observing a custom which tends to wipe out a single family.

To attribute such scruples to them is to commit the common, the
perpetually repeated mistake of judging the savage by the standard
of European civilisation.
If any of my readers set out with the
notion that all races of men think and act much in the same way as
educated Englishmen, the evidence of superstitious belief and custom
collected in this work should suffice to disabuse him of so
erroneous a prepossession.”

What really whacked thinking. You would think that with all the "required" education and "continuing" education teachers get that they would be better at teaching more kids more math. But they don't think in those terms. They think in limiting terms.

I contend that any kid with an average IQ can master up to trig in high school. Slightly smarter kids, or more motivated kids of average intelligence, can master calculus. Also recognize that kids born with below average intelligence, just are not going to be able to deal abstractly at the same levels of more intelligent kids. It doesn't mean they can't learn math, including math that is useful in every day life and in trades.

It just requires teachers that seem unlimited potential in their students, instead of limiting their potential as this article suggests.

Just another way of representing a frame rotation, instead of three rotations about each axis (i.e. pitch, roll, yaw), its a single rotation about a vector defined in the quaternion. Thats all it is.
