The family of Ma'Khia Bryant remembered her as a "beautiful" and "sweet" girl and questioned why a Columbus, Ohio, officer shot her.
Her mother, Paula Bryant said: "Ma'Khia was a sweet little girl. She didn't deserve what happened to her."
Police said the video shows a girl, identified as Ma'Khia, trying to stab a person on the ground, as well as another person leaning against a car. Officer Reardon fires his weapon four times, and Ma'Khia falls to the ground, the video shows.
She was pronounced dead at a hospital.
"Ma'Khia was a good student, a good person, and did not deserve what happened to her. We want to remind everyone Ma'Khia was only a 16 year old teenage girl. We are deeply disturbed by the disproportionate and unjustified use of force in this situation," the family said. "And while we remain encouraged by public support and all of the prayers shared with us; at the end of the day, we know nothing will bring back our beloved Ma'Khia. We respectfully request justice for Ma'Khia Bryant."
Ma'Khia was in the foster care system . Cousin Don Bryant declined to comment about why or how long.
Her business education teacher, Austin Owens, said she had big dreams for herself.
"She was going to run the world, and she wasn't going to be ostentatious about it," Owens said. "She was going to do it." She wrote in a five-year-plan assignment that she wanted to go to college and open her own eyelash salon.
Her Facebook profile shows her blowing a kiss at the camera.
The department said police picked up what appeared to be a knife near Ma'Khia's body.
Don Bryant questioned why police did not use de-escalation tactics.
"What's going on that we have to be so trigger-happy these days?"

Very good question.
And what was she doing with a knife and threatening to stab the other girl?
Nice girls don’t do dat.
This article just cries out see my tagline...should have thought of it sooner yeah I know...
At my age, I’d be happy with a long-lasting and non-toxic dye job. But I wouldn’t trust an angry, knife-wielding little girl anywhere near my eyes.
From her eyelash salon?
The “dindu nuffin ghettopotamus” will still get big bucks for her sweet & dedicated mama.
The girl in pink was a former foster child of ma’khias’ foster mother. The foster mother said the girl told the criminal she should clean up her room because the mom likes a clean house and the criminal attacked the girl in the pink shirt. The whole story about the criminal calling the cops doesn’t add up
She was a good girl. Trying to stab two people, but a good girl. Had one of the others killed her, it would have been justifiable homicide. We have the 911 call, we have multiple videos. This was a good shooting.
I don’t believe any shooting of a human being can be called ‘good’. But many are certainly justified - like this one.
What a perfectly written statement from the family. I imagine someone from Crump’s office wrote it.
What would have been the result, if the police officer had fired a taser, or shot into the air, with no effect - and the blade landed?
The family of the girl in pink would certainly have had justified complaint...
I ONLY want to hear a big “THANK YOU MR> POLICEMAN FOR SAVING MY LIFE” from the girl she was going to stab to death! BUT NOOOOOOOOO.........what the hell is wrong with people these days??
Named because she was conceived in “my Kia”?
Play by the Rules Of The Jungle, deal with the consequences.
Why was she in a foster home?
In the old days the families responsible for raising thugs were thrown out of town. Or worse.
I assume that you didn’t see the “</sarc>”. Her mamma called her ‘a sweet little girl’. That is why it’s in quotes.
The cop did what he needed to do, to stop her attack on the other female. Imagine if he had NOT intervened! Is it any wonder that so few are applying to be cops?
If you watch the video from across the street the first thing the cop did was try to break up the first fight. Once My Kia got up from that fight and went after pink, there wasn't anything else he could do.
The video makes it obvious that this “sweet” girl had a major anger issues and was very willing to do great bodily harm or even kill her peers. The way she was brandishing that knife makes her intent very clear.
