BRUSSELS (AP) — The European Union is estimating that 150,000 Russian troops have already amassed for the biggest military buildup ever near Ukraine’s borders and that it will only take “a spark” to set off a confrontation.
At the same time, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said Monday that the condition of imprisoned Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny was “critical” and that the 27-nation group would hold the Kremlin accountable for his health and safety.
Despite the worrisome developments, Borrell said after a virtual meeting of the EU foreign ministers that, “for the time being, there is no move in the field of more sanctions” to be slapped on Russia.
He also said there wasn’t a request for a synchronized EU diplomatic move of expulsions in the standoff between EU member state the Czech Republic and Russia following Prague’s accusation that Moscow was involved in a 2014 ammunition depot explosion.
More dangerous at this time, Borrell said, was the massing of Russian troops, including military field hospitals, and “all kinds of warfare.”
“It is the highest military deployment of the Russian army on the Ukrainian borders ever. It’s clear that it’s a matter of concern when you deploy a lot of troops,” Borrell said. “Well, a spark can jump here or there.”
Borrell declined to say where he got the 150,000 Russian troop figure from. But it is bigger than the 110,000 estimate provided by Ukrainian Defense Minister Andriy Taran on Wednesday.

Would this be happening if Trump was in office. Just wondering.
Fantastic!! Love seeing Putin stick his thumb in the eye of the western globalists... say what you want about Putin, but we have a common enemy and therefore he is an ‘ally’ of some degree.
My only problem with Putin is that like other leaders I think he wanted Trump out of office so we would be weak. Them and china want us weaker.
I thought Navalny was dead?
Vlad better hope he doesn’t get pedo joe fired up.
Headlines like this sound like they come from the 1940’s.
If any of the numbers presented are accurate, I have to consider
that the Ukraine is not the end point for Putin’s actions.
Further, China seems poised to take action against Taiwan,
and I will not dismiss the likelihood of this being the
opening gambit toward WWIII.
Am I wrong? I quite likely could be. I sure wouldn’t let
the other side get this far along without reacting.
The West better pull it’s head out. Preparedness may cause
caution on the other side, where it doesn’t seem to exist
presently.
He’s going full Bobby Sands.
Putin is an adversary and is testing Biden.
He has invaded Georgia, Crimea and eastern Ukraine already.
When Trump sent in top line anti tank weapons, they left.
I see the Putinescas are already here, with their propaganda:
1. Russia can invade with impunity
2. It’s none of our business.
I get it... but the USA as we knew it is dead. Unity is no longer possible in this nation. There are tens of millions of marxists and another hundred million who sympathize and enable them. Reconciliation is not possible. We shouldn’t be using the word ‘we’ as it pertains to the Federal Gov.
So, what’s the EU going to do about it.Refuse Russian gas thru Nord Stream 2? I don’t think so. Russia is the EU’s problem. We need to concentrate on the real threat to a national security interest, both militarily and economically, the Wuhan warriors.
Is Dementia Joe passing in his pants yet?
Chuckle.
Looks like defense and oil stonks will be the sweet spot this year.
Back in 2014 the German army was caught using painted broomsticks on some of their tanks due to a shortage of machine guns. If the EU decides to move against Russia I hope they upgrade those broomsticks to at least shovel handles.
The Euroweenies should feel free commit all the sanctions and as many troops as the feel like to the Ukraine’s defense.
And our own internal enemies, Putin is about #132 on the list.
