The sergeant major of the Army commended the second lieutenant whose December traffic stop prompted a lawsuit and the firing of a Virginia police officer for remaining cool as a pair of cops pointed their weapons at him.
"Like many of you," Sergeant Major of the Army Michael Grinston tweeted Monday, "I was concerned by the video of [2nd Lt. Caron] Nazario's traffic stop in December. He represented himself and our Army well through his calm, professional response to the situation -- I'm very proud of him."

When you bolt from police and take them on a mile-and-a-half high speed chase, lights and sirens, don’t expect to play “Officer Nice Patty Cake” when you finally pull over.
When they order, more than ten times, for you to stop your engine and put your hands out of the window, just do it.
The “Uber Woke” 2nd Looie was setting the entire thing up to go down as it did, including putting on his video camera.
It was a temp tag in the rear window as is common with a newly-purchased vehicle.
Could you please explain how exactly police should respond to a driver who - for no less than FOUR MINUTES - refuses to obey lawful commands during a traffic stop?
I’m all ears.
Was it visible?
Is there ANY doubt the US military has become as political as the FBI?
I HATE what is happening, and I’m a 25 year vet. Newsmax showed some of the otherwise unseen video last night, to include the idiot refusing to get out because “I don’t have to” and complaining how, as a serviceman, he was too special to obey a cop.
AND that he was concealing a gun on his person, while in uniform. In my day, concealed weapons were not allowed in uniform! Or out of uniform, if I’m on base. That part is still true. Don’t like it, but it is true.
>>We're well on our way to getting there. Just go to the near south side of Chicago and you'll see exactly what I mean.<<
Saw a much longer video on Newsmax last night. Went from feeling some sympathy for the Lt to being disgusted by his behavior - and went from believing the cop was a total jerk to believing the cop had good reason to do what he did.
That may be true. But once the cops were made aware of the valid tag things should have de-escalated immediately.

23-year Marine vet here. DoD Directive 1344.10 is now a dead letter.
In fact, you could argue that uniformed service members now have an implicit obligation to speak out favorably on progressive politics given the public comments of SecDEF, Joint Chiefs, several service branch leaders and unified combatant commanders.
It’s a Bizzaro-world that undermines good order & discipline making our military much less likely to be able to accomplish its mission when called upon.
It’s also true that concealed weapons are not allowed on base much less on base and in a POV. For better or worse, they have to be secured and stowed in every command I’m familiar with.
How can the be ‘made aware’ of anything while the driver refused to get out of the car and follow the commands of the police?
I don't think he "bolted" when he drove to a well-lit area. And I agree he should have been more compliant. Any time I am stopped by the police I do what they say. I just have a problem with the idea that a guy driving in his vehicle gets pulled over and told to comply over what was essentially nothing. Thank God they didn't shoot the guy.
“How can the be ‘made aware’ of anything while the driver refused to get out of the car and follow the commands of the police?”
Maybe shine a flashlight into the rear window? Just a thought. I believe most police officers are issued them. I’m also pretty sure they have them installed in their vehicles.

Q: So Sergeant Major, when you give an order to one of the E4s that work for you and it isn’t obeyed, are you proud of them?
Of course you are. Nothing wrong with it. I used to be a cop and I don’t like them that much either. Especially when I got a speeding ticket a couple of months ago. I think I wrote one in my 10+ years, but gave plenty of warnings, even to folks that were jerks.
Again, the Lt is the one to blame. He could have handled this much differently and he would have been on his way.
Of course this traffic stop was just a routine, let me f*ck with someone, just like this one
If he had his tag properly displayed we wouldn’t be typing about it.
If he had just followed the cop lawful orders, per SCOTUS, we wouldn’t be typing about it.
If he wasn’t a SJW in a uniform we wouldn’t be typing about it.
Again, reach out to him and ask him what he does when a PFC or Specialist doesn’t do what he tells them to do.
This Lt is the type who got his commission because the ROTC commander just passed him off to the next guy.
Actually he was doing his job. May seem chickensh*t to you hero, but it was a valid traffic stop that could have been over and done with in about 5 mins or less.
Watch this “routine traffic stop” for why normal cops would be super hyped up after a 1.5 mile high speed chase.
“Just going to a well lit area” is the Uber Woke 2nd LTs version of events, as he planned his Viral Video and set up his camera.
Watch it all, but here is a “routine traffic stop.” Roll film.

You ain’t lying. But he isn’t ignoring an order or he can kiss E5 goodbye and get out as an E4
GMTA, see 56.
This is the type of Uber Woke Proggy Officer the DOD wants to retain, while they drive out white Christian conservatives as “extremists.”
This 2nd Looie, who set up his camera to record his planned viral video, is just the type who will be glad to lead gun confiscation raids, Constitution be damned.
It’s just an old parchment written by evil white slave holders.
“My understanding is that the guy had a loaded pistol on the passenger seat”
“That might be completely legal in Virginia.”
My info is about 20 years old but...it is perfectly legal to carry a loaded firearm in your vehicle as long as it is IN PLAIN SIGHT.
If it is not in plain sight then you must have a concealed carry permit.
Also the story stated that the temporary tag was visible through the rear window. A no no in Virginia.
The ONLY place a tag may be legally placed is on the tag carrier. Usually on the front and rear bumpers.
If they pulled him over for illegal display of a tag he would have probably gotten instruction on the proper display of the tag, examination of his paperwork and license.
By refusing to pull over promptly he started out on the wrong foot. Believe me, I know.
By being uncooperative he made the situation worse.
Every step along the way the Lt made the worst possible choice.
See the video at 56 for why these officers were fully hyped up, guns ready, after a 1.5 mile lights and sirens chase.
They did not know the 2nd LT had his viral video all planned and set up, camera running.
