The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday will discuss taking up a major new gun rights case involving a National Rifle Association-backed challenge to a New York state law that restricts the ability of residents to carry concealed handguns in public...Two gun owners and the New York affiliate of the NRA, an influential gun rights group closely aligned with Republicans, are asking the justices to hear an appeal of a lower court ruling throwing out their challenge to a policy that requires a state resident to show "proper cause" to obtain a permit to carry a concealed handgun outside the home.

You’d think calls for “defunding the police” would be an adequate reason, FFS.

I’m not going to guess. Justice Kavanaugh wrote a dissent against an assault weapons ban in Washington, D.C. That was great, but I don’t know what each of the five best justices would write about some of the other issues.

Here are the more American justices we have so far. They all have records indicating good support in various ways for the Second Amendment. Their individual opinions might go one way or another on more specific issues having to do with regulations.

Thomas

Kavanaugh

Gorsuch

Alito

Barrett

Re: "The NRA, an influential gun rights group..."

Is that the same influential NRA gun rights group that declared bankruptcy a couple months ago?

Yes back them when the swat team raids you to confiscate/steal your firearms. The police are the club of the government. You didn’t see them rounding up the antifa rioters because the government didn’t want them rounded up. On the flip screen side you will see them carry out vigorous enforcement of gun confiscation because that’s what the government wants. “Defund the police” is just the government’s way of selectively enforcing the law.

Yes, back the blue with constitutional carry, so police won’t risk their lives so much! More often, they would simply secure and investigate the scene after an incident, and incidents wouldn’t be as common (armed society, more polite society, criminals more often afraid to attack).

***that requires a state resident to show “proper cause” to obtain a permit to carry a concealed handgun outside the home.***

In 1858, the Taney court ruled that one of the rights citizens had was the right to “Keep and carry arms wherever they went.”

What the SCOTUS thought about gun control in the pre Civil War era.
“It would give to persons of the negro race, who were recognised as citizens in any one State of the Union, the right to enter every other State whenever they pleased, singly or in companies, without pass or passport, and without obstruction, to sojourn there as long as they pleased, to go where they pleased at every hour of the day or night without molestation, unless they committed some violation of law for which a white man would be punished;
and it would give them the full liberty of speech in public and in private upon all subjects upon which its own citizens might speak; to hold public meetings upon political affairs,
and to KEEP AND CARRY ARMS wherever they went.”

Paragraph 77 in the link below.

With 30 MILLION AW style rifles in public hands I don’t believe they can get them all out of the public’s hands.

It is not like a few hundred Thompson sub machine guns in 1934.

But remember, if the DO get an un-enforcable ban they will then move on their original target from 1962-1985, HANDGUNS.

Notable opinions
Federalism
[Excerpt:]

“A dissenting opinion in United States v. Rybar, 103 F.3d 273 (3d Cir. 1996), arguing that a U.S. law banning private citizens from owning submachine guns was similar to one struck down by the Supreme Court in United States v. Lopez and thus outside the authority of Congress under the Commerce Clause of the U.S. Constitution.”

Neil Gorsuch
Wikipedia

Second Amendment
[Excerpt:]

“Gorsuch joined Justice Thomas’s dissent from denial of certiorari in Peruta v. San Diego County, in which the Ninth Circuit had upheld California’s restrictive concealed carry laws.[120]

Gorsuch wrote a statement regarding the denial of an application for a stay presented to Chief Justice John Roberts in the 2019 United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit case Guedes v. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, a case challenging the Donald Trump administration’s ban on bump stocks. In his statement Gorsuch criticed the action of the Trump Administration as well as the justification used by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit for its opinion uphelding the ban.[121][122]”

Thanks, Ruy Dias de Bivar! A few weeks ago, some people here were applauding someone as a legal genius and Second Amendment supporter. That “genius” used the Civil War era cases repeatedly to argue that we don’t have a right to carry in public. I argued with him or her for days.

I see the NRA is involved so I can see why they would make this about 2A.

They SHOULD have followed Roe V Wade and made this about 14A.

Rights granted to citizens in other states are being denied to citizens in NY.

May not be as glamorous, but WAY more effective.
