You are right. During the Clinton administration, the detail whose job it was to do the security clearances could never finish his job.

Hillary thought she was so smart when she got Huma out of completing her security clearance.

So, what that says is that Huma never got a security clearance for all that top secret information she was handling.

My guess is that there is more to the story. Possibilities: the fired staffers lied about their level of use. Or they lied about how recent their use may have been. Or they were using a lot of stuff other than pot as well. Or they were dealing. I suppose the list could be extended. The WH is trying to minimize the embarrassment and the damage to their future employability, but my guess is that more is involved.
