Road Trip: Naval Station Mayport, Florida

FLnsmayport3

Naval Station Mayport is a major United States Navy base in Jacksonville, Florida. It contains a protected harbor that can accommodate aircraft carrier-size vessels, ship's intermediate maintenance activity (SIMA) and a military airfield (Admiral David L. McDonald Field) with one asphalt paved runway measuring 8,001 ft × 200 ft.

Since its commissioning in December 1942, Naval Station Mayport has grown to become the third largest fleet concentration area in the United States. Mayport's operational composition is unique, with a busy harbor capable of accommodating 34 ships and an 8,000-foot runway capable of handling any aircraft in the Department of Defense inventory.

FLnsmayport5

With more than 3,400 acres, NS Mayport is host to more than 80 tenant commands including 22 naval ships and six Light Airborne Multi-purpose System (LAMPS) Mark III helicopter squadrons. NS Mayport is also the operational and training headquarters for the SH-60B Seahawk LAMPS MKIII with a primary mission of anti-submarine warfare.

FLnsmayport4

Mayport had been the home of Destroyer Squadron 14 for years. On July 31, 2015, the squadron was merged with Cruiser-Destroyer Readiness Support Detachment Mayport to form Naval Surface Squadron Fourteen (NAVSURFRON14). Currently, the squadron consists of the destroyers Carney, The Sullivans, Lassen, Farragut, Thomas Hudner, Paul Ignatius, and the Delbert D. Black.

Also based at Mayport is the amphibious ready group led by USS Iwo Jima. The group consists of Iwo Jima, New York, and Fort McHenry. The New York is no longer based at Naval Station Mayport and was homeport shifted to Naval Station Norfolk.

Snow Muse

Bible in a Year:

He says to the snow, “Fall on the earth,” and to the rain shower, “Be a mighty downpour.”

Job 37:6

Named for a tough blue-collar neighborhood in Cincinnati, Ohio, the grassroots musical group Over the Rhine sings about a transformation that took place each year in the city. “Whenever we’d get our first real snowfall of the year, it felt like something sacred was happening,” explains band co-founder Linford Detweiler. “Like a little bit of a fresh start. The city would slow down and grow quiet.”

If you’ve experienced a heavy snowfall, you understand how it can inspire a song. A magical quietness drapes the world as snow conceals grime and grayness. For a few moments, winter’s bleakness brightens, inviting our reflection and delight.

Elihu, the one friend of Job who may have had a helpful view of God, noted how creation commands our attention. “God’s voice thunders in marvelous ways,” he said (Job 37:5). “He says to the snow, ‘Fall on the earth,’ and to the rain shower, ‘Be a mighty downpour.’ ” Such splendor can interrupt our lives, demanding a sacred pause. “So that everyone he has made may know his work, he stops all people from their labor,” Elihu observed (vv. 6–7).

Nature sometimes seizes our attention in ways we don’t like. Regardless of what happens to us or what we observe around us, each moment—magnificent, menacing, or mundane—can inspire our worship. The poet’s heart within us craves the holy hush.

Reflect & Pray

What events or things motivate you to ponder God’s greatness and creativity? How can you experience His wonder in your ordinary moments today?

Father, help me to see Your hand in everything today. Give me a heart to appreciate Your amazing works.

Howdy, PRO.

How was your weekend? Weather still decent? Are you expecting nasty weather from the big storm system moving in?

Hiya radu!

Doing well, decent weather continues. No storm system coming my way that I'm aware of, it's suppose to continue to warm-up a bit here.

'Sup your way?
