Electric Vehicles Are the U.S. Auto Industry’s Future—If Dealers Can Figure Out How to Sell Them
The Wall Street Journal ^ | March 7, 2021 | Nora Naughton |

Car dealer Brad Sowers is spending money to prepare for the coming wave of new electric models from General Motors Co. He is installing charging stations, upgrading service bays and retraining staff at his St. Louis-area dealership to handle the technology-packed vehicles.

But when he considers how many plug-in Chevy Bolts he sold last year—nine, out of the nearly 4,000 Chevrolets sold at his Missouri dealerships—it gives him pause.

“The consumer in the middle of America just isn’t there yet,” when it comes to switching to electric vehicles, he said, citing the long distances many of his customers drive daily and a lack of charging infrastructure outside major cities.

As auto executives and investors buzz about the coming age of the electric car, many dealers say they are struggling to square that enthusiasm with the reality today on new-car sales lots, where last year battery-powered vehicles made up fewer than 2% of U.S. auto sales.

Most consumers who come to showrooms aren’t shopping for electric cars, and with gasoline prices relatively low, even hybrid models can be a tough sell, dealers and industry analysts say.

Auto makers are moving aggressively to expand their electric-vehicle offerings with dozens of new models set to arrive in coming years. Some like GM are setting firm targets for when they plan to phase out gas-powered cars entirely.

“If you don’t drive much, get an old beater that’s nearly free to drive.”

My wife wanted me to get rid of the 1997 Buick that we bought for our kids years ago. It is now my daily driver while I try to keep the mileage down on my 2011 truck that I use for work.

I mentioned to one of the kids, the only thing about driving the Buick is that it makes me look even older than I actually am!

She replied “I don’t know - I’ve always associated this car with young kids - so to me it makes you seem younger!”

(Good answer!)

"I'm gonna fix that some day."

LOL. I have to fix things at the end of nearly every weekend. Doesn't help doing things like this. I wonder how a giant battery pack on the bottom of a vehicle would fare?

Also, FJ's rock!

Meaning that it is NOWHERE the size and scope of the gasoline distribution network.

“Oh”, he says, Columbo like, “Just one other thing. From WHERE is this hydrogen going to be obtained?”

I met a guy that bought an old (1990??) Ford Ranger that was electric! He bought it for $500 and put in a new battery system.

I asked him, if he didn’t mind, how much that cost him.

$8,500. (He did the removal and installation himself).

So that is about the cost of having someone put a new gas engine in a vehicle.

He said he drives it back and forth to work, and every 3 days (70 miles) he recharges it overnight. At a cost of $4.

I haven’t done the math, but the idea of getting three days of commuting for $4 instead of about $14 every three days means he saves about $20 a week. (Okay - doing the math!)

$20 a week savings x 50 weeks is $1,000 savings a year.

In 9 years he’ll have paid off the cost of the vehicle. The old battery lasted 20 years, so he can drive it for “free” for 11 years - perhaps. (It will be 40 years old by then - with who-knows-what other problems).

I don’t know. It sounds like he got a good deal, had the enjoyment of working on it himself and getting it running, and can commute for under $8 a week!

The Junk expands to fill the available space.

I put it a little differently...

If I had twice as much space, I'd have twice as much junk.
