Volvo says it will make only electric vehicles by 2030. But if you want one, you’ll have to buy it online.
The Swedish automaker said Tuesday that it is phasing out the production of all cars with internal combustion engines — including hybrids.
“There is no long-term future for cars with an internal combustion engine,” said Henrik Green, Volvo’s chief technology officer.
Volvo’s announcement follows General Motors’ pledge earlier this year to make only battery-powered vehicles by 2035.

We shall see.
I am not against E vehicles I am against them being shoved down are throat’s.
From what I have read to charge a single Tesla is something like 50 Amps. Most houses only have a 100 or 200 amp service. If you want to charge more than a single electric car suddenly your 200 amp service will likely not be enough. Now, factor in Practically every house on the block pulling an extra hundred amps or more consistently for hours on end.
Most electrical distribution is designed where you’re gonna have a house that may say draw 150 A on a hot summer day with a pool, air conditioning, etc. running but it will not pull 150 amps all the time as air conditioning other appliances cycle on and off as needed, same goes with every other house. Now is our electrical grid up to the task of supporting an extra hundred amps or more consistent power draw to every house at nearly identical times. I don’t think it is.
That’s like the government telling people they couldn’t have horses anymore...in the 1870’s.
Friends don’t let friends buy Volvos.
Which makes them ideally suited for liberals.
Do read again what I did and didn't :) write.
I wrote that it made sense -- for Volvo.
Volvo is
Volvo is a niche player.
There's going to be a market for ICE manufacturers and they're going to continue to build as long as there is a market
Your question is like asking "if typewriter makers make only compueters where do consumers who want manual typewriters go to buy one?" -- and the thing is that companies continued manufacturing them but the market was so non-existent it didn't pay off
As long as there's a market for ICE cars, someone will make them.
EV market share will increase, driven by governmental pressure, but it will be virtually impossible to power a huge EV fleet without a wholesale commitment to nuclear generation. And that is not on the horizon.
EXACTLLY -- Volvo is a niche player even in Europe. They will continue to sell - in fact they may even grow if they focus only on electric cars. But there will still be ICE car manufacturers.
Heck - the last manual typewriters were being made in India until 2017 - and they were high quality, but the sales worldwide dropped to a few dozen a year - not worth it for the manufacturers
Generac is backed up for months. Friend ordered one inAugust, just got it a couple weeks ago.
“Tesla’s new Model S can get 400 miles on a charge.”
What’s the effect of running the air conditioner or heater?
I’d love to have an electric car but feel I’d still need a gas-powered one for longer trips. Maybe the solution is to rent a gas-powered one for those longer trips.
I used to live next door to a guy who owned the only Volvo dealer in Milwaukee. He was always trying to get me to buy one and stop driving Toyota. Maybe because we were just two guys talking in the back yard but he put down his guard a few times and admitted that if you want a Volvo to run over 100,000 miles you have to spend $2000 per year in maintenance.
I still have a Toyota Prius with 400,000 miles and I think besides oil changes and plugs, I changed the water pump once.
“For me the biggest takeaway for me here is the shift to purchasing online.”
What’s the relevance of purchasing online to elecrification of cars?
Also, Volvo’s announcement of conversion to electric by 2030 can only be for political purposes. You just can’t predict that far ahead.
I know Toyota is doing a lot of r&d with regard to Hydrogen fuel cell technology. This seems to be a much better alternative. The only advantage I see to electric vehicles is fewer parts. Charging, batteries, infrastructure, etc., seem to be large challenges that H won’t have. JMHO
What’s the relevance of purchasing online to elecrification of cars?
In theory thay would reduce the amount of car usage going to brick and motar stores.
I’d expect the plan is that they will continue to receive government subsidies while the government buys their fleet from them. Kind of like here. Eventually they will sell enough that there will be a mass demand for charging stations and some government crony or donor will get the contract. There is always going to be a planned shortage unless the said nation decides to build advanced nuclear reactors throughout the country to sustain said fleets.
I’d anticipate a shortage. Population control.
So of these eco types like AOC are just flaiming imbeciles. Many tho are not and know the insane push, ready or not, is to control and limit the masses.
What is the plan for left over gas from cracking oil? That’s probably the easier question. Then you have the issue of increasing electricity generation and transmission to support this nonsense with the exclusion of nuclear.
I doubt anyone in a northern tier state supports this with your enthusiastic belief that batteries will be sufficient for their needs until they solve their cold performance issues.
I suspect people will be walking a lot more in the future.
Why? This is for Volvo cars. This is a niche car manufacturer that will stop making NEW ICE cars from 2030.
The poor will buy second-hand. Heck, I buy second-hand cars.
the poor will keep buying second-hand Volvos until 2040 or 2050
I’m waiting on the electric driven models.
Sure it does Cronos. What is the range at -20?
