Looking through my Billboard Top 40’s book (1955-2000), I found two great MTV video songs from England:

Fine Young Cannibals - “She Drives Me Crazy”, No. 1, 1989

Escape Club - “ Wild, Wild West”, #1, 1988.

Didn’t Donovan do “Season of the Witch”? A very interesting song that was used in a movie at the end where a woman is skating on a pond to it.

Bee Gees (Born in England, Moved to Australia in 1958) - Just saw a show on Md. Public TV show on them, one of their shows in Australia. Many great songs recorded in both countries, including:

* To Love Somebody
* Lonely Days
* JIVE TALKIN’
* Nights on Broadway
* How Deep is Your Love
* STAYIN’ ALIVE - Long live DISCO!!!
* NIGHT FEVER
*

* Edison Lighthouse - “Love Grows Where my Rosemary Goes”, #5, 1970, one hit wonder group but the lead singer Tony Burrows was also in “The Brotherhood of Man” - “United We Stand; and “White Plains” - “My Baby Loves Lovin’”, #13, 1970. all essential “one hit wonders” but really lovely and catchy songs

and lastly,

* CLiff Richard - “Devil Woman”, #6, 1976

Maybe we should do a song search for singers/groups from Scotland and Canada. Lots of great songs and talent from those places.

It isn’t jazz, but it is about Pirates. No doubt taking English ships.

Emerson, Lake and Palmer, “Pirates” (live):

What I first thought of though was ELP’s “Jerusalem”:

“And did those feet in ancient time
Walk upon England’s mountains green?
And was the Holy Lamb of God
On England’s pleasant pastures seen?”

Till There Was You, was on the Meet The Beatles (first Beatles album released in the States) album. My British husband didn’t know the song was actually from The Music Man. Just thought it was a pretty song. Love the heavily accented line ‘but I never soar them winging’ from McCartney.
