Graham, Trump huddle to talk GOP's 2022 strategy

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said on Monday that he discussed the 2022 elections during a weekend meeting with former President Trump that he had billed as part of an effort to unite a fractured party.

Graham, returning to the Capitol on Monday evening, said they "just talked about the 2022 cycle."

"He’s very involved in helping the team win," Graham added, noting that Trump "made a bunch of phone calls" and is "trying to get the best team on the field."

An adviser to the former president didn't immediately respond to a question about the meeting and what, if any, outreach Trump did.

Graham traveled to Florida over the weekend to discuss the future of the Republican Party with Trump, who has indicated he wants to remain as the dominant force heading into the 2022 midterm elections and 2024 presidential election.

"I want us to come together as much as possible. I think we need to be united around getting the majority back. ... The worst possible outcome for the Republican Party is to continue to argue amongst itself," Graham told reporters on Friday.

The meeting comes as high-profile divisions have emerged among Republican lawmakers, who are grappling with how to approach Trump following the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol.

Senate Republicans have signaled that they are ready to move on while acknowledging that it's far from clear the former president or the party base will let them.

Trump lashed out at Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell after the Kentucky Republican said during a floor speech that the former president was "morally responsible" for the attack carried out by his supporters.

McConnell's speech drew criticism from some members of the caucus — namely Graham and Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), who argued he didn't speak for most Senate Republicans.

GOP operatives have warned that a high-profile feud could hurt the party's chances of winning back the House and Senate next year.

Republicans have watched as fierce GOP primary fights have cost them Senate seats they hoped to win in previous cycles. And both McConnell and Trump have indicated they are willing to wade into GOP primaries.

McConnell and his allies are keeping an eye out for candidates they worry could win a primary but be unelectable in the general election.

Trump has not said who he intends to back, though he's previously endorsed primary challenges against Republicans such as Sen. John Thune (S.D.), who is up in 2022.

He indicated during a fiery statement hitting back at McConnell that he would back primary candidates who "espouse Making America Great Again."

"Where necessary and appropriate, I will back primary rivals who espouse Making America Great Again and our policy of America First. We want brilliant, strong, thoughtful, and compassionate leadership," Trump said.

Really hope Trump doesn't listen to Graham. All he wants to do is protect his friends...

Flimsey Grahamnesty is a duplicitous weasel.
One of the worst of the Bush League Republicans.

Murkowsky, Thune, Hoeven, Blunt, Grassley, Lankford, Lee, Scott and Rubio are all Bush League Republicans and should have primary challengers.

If we are serious about taking over the GOP, every one of these must be replaced in 2022.

If true, PDJT continues to make extremely BAD CHOICES in the people who he consults with and hires. Graham has been an obvious snake in the grass for years. WHY would Trump even spend five minutes with this person?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mitch and his pals always make sure this comes true by assisting the Democrat to win against the conservative.
They have done it repeatedly.
I hope that Graham sees the light. Murk and Cheney at least have to be put out to pasture. I don’t know how anyone could argue that. They only ever help Democrats. If Murkowski’s vote torpedoes Tanden at OMB that will literally be the only time she’s ever cast a vote that helped us and in the grand scheme of things, it’s not that important.
This is Graham trying to convince Trump to get behind Nikki Haley.
After Graham won and Trump didn’t, Lindsey G posted a video and he was absolutely Giddy. He said, he had to pinch himself.
Graham undermined Trump every time.
Step 1. Disregard anything Lindsay has to contribute.
McConnell and his allies are keeping an eye out for candidates they worry could win a primary but won't be helped by the GOPe in the general election because they're actual conservatives.
The GOO’s “strategy” is to lose gracefully. Nothing scares the gelded old pukes more than the responsibilities of leadership.
“McConnell and his allies are keeping an eye out for candidates they worry could win a primary but be unelectable in the general election.”
In the past, McConnell seemed even more concerned that the Republican who won the Primary, would be the one who would vote for him as Majority Leader.
Maybe Graham is angling for that job. Old Cocaine Mitch seems to have become vulnerable, by attacking the popular President Trump.
Graham will sell him on the value of the RP, in all this.
Who cares if they ignored him and didn’t help at all?
McConnell did the judge part of his job, and did nothing else.
Now he calls for investigations of Trump.
I suspect a brain scan would show as big a black hole in
his head as Biden suffers from.
Trump has learned absolutely nothing from the last 4 years and the last 6 months especially if he is listening to one word that Graham says except to learn how the enemy’s of freedom are thinking.
Worse than won’t be helped by the GOP, they actively assist the Democrat to win.
It has happened in AL, MO, IN, DE, NV.
My offer stands.
For the last couple of years I have offered a sandwich to the first person who can send a video of Sen Graham doing something.
