Chinese, Japanese chase each other near disputed Diaoyu Islands as tensions rise in East China Sea

Multiple attempts by Chinese coastguard vessels to approach Japanese vessels in the East China Sea represent Beijing’s intensifying efforts to assert its sovereignty over the disputed Diaoyu Islands, known as the Senkakus in Japan, analysts said on Monday. The latest incidents happened on Saturday and Sunday, when Japan’s coastguard said two Chinese coastguard vessels had repeatedly entered Japan’s territorial waters and had made moves to approach a Japanese fishing boat carrying three passengers near the islands, which are under the administrative control of Japan. A Japanese patrol vessel deployed around the fishing boat to ensure its safety warned the Chinese ships to leave Japanese territory, Japan’s coastguard said. Two other Chinese vessels were also spotted cruising in the so-called contiguous zone just outside Japan’s territorial waters. One of them appeared to be armed with an autocannon, the coastguard said.

You’re welcome. I had really good history teachers back in high school. When we were studying WW II, they covered Pearl Harbor, the Battle of Midway, and D-Day. But they also talked about Vichy France, the Eastern Front, and the Sino-Japanese War.

It’s funny how much I can remember from those classes (40 years ago). But darn if I can remember where I put my car keys two hours ago.

The Japanese Navy would hand them their ass.

Most definitely, the Chinese Navy has little experience, untested hardware, flimsy ships and would lose bigly if fighting the Japanese Navy. Japan has over a century of naval experience against superpowers (Russia, etc.).

The Japanese People are the key ingredient in a war with the Chinese. They are smart and energetic. They love their country and will fight insanely to the death for it. I say all this because I lived in Sasebo, Japan for 2 years. One of my hugest memories is driving down the streets of the base and seeing the US Navy Japanese workers outside in the parking lot doing calisthenics. Us Sailors would be dragging in to work still buttoning clothes on, hats askew, lounging around in groups, still hung over from the night before, smoking etc;

But, hey, WE (marines and sailors and some army) kicked THEIR ASS didn’t we!

That would be big fun, should that happen.

Maybe they’d blow that big dam on the Ganges river and really mess things up.

The CCP have it coming.

Plus, Japan has the Divine Wind, the giant storm that swept aside the Chinese invasion fleet carrying 100,000 soldiers.

Don’t forget that during the the latter half of that war, we were kicking Japan from the one end of the ocean to the other.

Might have been a consideration.

Kind of like Russia bragging about beating Germany as if Normandy had nothing to do with it.

Not our problem.

Unfortunately, you're wrong. The Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security between the United States and Japan requires the US to intervene on Japan's side in military conflicts. So it is our problem, even though no American should have to die for a couple of worthless uninhabited rocks. There are also about 50,000 American military personnel in Japan at any one time, sitting ducks in any war between the two countries, including the US Seventh Fleet.

True. And that certainly helped the Chinese in their war against Japan. On the other hand, the Chinese defenders were made up of two forces that hated and distrusted each other - the Nationalists and the Communists. There could be no unified command structure, as was true elsewhere. Given that, I’d say the Chinese did quite well holding back Tojo and his gang.

And be responsible for the displacement and death of many of the 400 million people that live downstream, as well as wiping out the major food growing regions of China? What a horrible wish!

I’d point out that the CCP is NOT the 1.45 billion Chinese people.

No indeed it, the CCP, are not the Chinese people.

However, if that's what it takes to effect a positive change in regime in China after what the CCP have done in the last year and a half or so to the entire world, one would cheer it on. Indeed, the biological attack against the entire world is testimony to the fact that they, the CCP, love to take casualties because they consider any conflict of attrition to be their strong hand.

Such a comparatively restrained event would still be quite a bit short of strategically nuking the entire place off of the face of the planet and making it forever inhabitable, so there is that.

Correct, and don’t forget that at least up until Pearl Harbor, American (and Russian) pilots were assisting those Chinese ground forces. I had known about the Flying Tigers for a while, but I did not realize the Russians were also involved until I read about a certain Russian pilot who was honored for his service during that time.

Air power makes a difference.

You are disgusting by wishing the deaths of hundreds of millions of innocent people for your political views - it, if you could carry it out, would make you the largest mass murderer in history.

Such an attack would trigger a nuclear war and the US would be the biggest loser. If we kill 400 million of their people by blowing the 3 Gorges Dam, they would retaliate out of revenge and to save face by doing their utmost to inflict the same number of US casualties.

Additionally, they have a mutual defense treaty with Russia, which would be obliged to come in on the Chinese side - say what you will about Chinese nuclear capabilities, but the Russian capabilities are on par or better than ours, so you would be signing the death warrant for you and yours as well as millions of other innocent US citizens. But you would smugly feel proud of teaching those Chinese a lesson, I suppose.

No the CCP does not “love to take casualties because they consider any conflict of attrition to be their strong hand”. The CCP would take casualties ONLY because they consider their people expendable as long as the power of the CCP is not infringed nor caused to lose face - no matter how slight. And that applies more to Chinese daily life than to any war:

“The CCP wants to control everything and only allows pro-CCP organizations, even in foreign countries. If an organization is big enough, the CCP will try to control it; if it won’t cooperate, the CCP will treat it as an enemy.” - mainland Chinese overseas student.
