Texas Sen. Ted Cruz admitted Thursday that traveling to Cancun, Mexico as his constituents suffered in freezing homes amid power outages was "obviously a mistake."
The Republican spoke outside his Texas home as a sizable group of protesters chanted just yards away.
"It was obviously a mistake, and in hindsight, I wouldn't have done it," Cruz acknowledged. He reiterated his previous contention that he had gone in order to take his daughters to Mexico to get them out of the cold. "I was trying to be a dad," he said. "When you've got two girls who have been cold for two days and haven't had heat or power, and they're saying 'Look, we don't have school, why don't we go - let's get out of here . . . " The senator will join Sean Hannity Thursday night on Hannity at 9pm et.

Not a huge Cruz fan. Good that he admitted his mistake early in the process. Not sure what a US Senator can do except feel the pain of his constituents.

How would his presence in Texas made anything better? He’s a Senator, not the Governor or any other state official. Should he have been out there supervising the restoration of electricity, the thawing of windmills? This is stupid. Yes it looks bad, but the whole thing is stupid.
He has a residence in Washington DC, that’s where he should have taken his kids.

Funny. Cruz is not defending himself, but admitting his mistake.
Shame the CruzBots were blind to the mistake too on the earlier thread.
It was a mistake. And many of us said so.
And so has Cruz.
Heidi Cruz was planning a get together with friends, neighbors, and family in Cancun.
He is my senator and I think it is fine if he flew his girls somewhere. That is not a standard I would hold him to. Now if he had electricity and water the whole time at his home because of who he is ,then that might be a problem.
I will vote for him again if he keeps true to our core values.

This isn’t about Cancun, it’s about objecting to the election. Cancun is convenient.
Good point. Or he should have sent his wife and kids while he remained. That would have been the smart thing to do. We know where he would have been when the Titanic was sinking.

Senator Cruz confirms to reporters he’d planned to stay in Cancun through the weekend.
When the power went out at his home & school was canceled, his kids said “let’s go somewhere where it’s not so cold,” so they booked the trip to Cancun.
“It’s been a tough week,” he said.
