Power cut across Texas as snow, ice blanket southern Plains

DALLAS (AP) — A winter storm dropping snow and ice also sent temperatures plunging across the southern Plains, prompting a power emergency in Texas a day after conditions canceled flights and impacted traffic across large swaths of the U.S.

Rotating power outages were initiated by the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, or ERCOT, early Monday morning, meaning thousands went without electricity for short periods as temperatures fell into the teens near Dallas and 20s (about minus 5 degrees Celsius) around Houston.

Officials in Houston had warned people to prepare for outages and hazardous roads — conditions similar to what residents might see in the wake of a Category 5 hurricane

The region had been gearing up for the winter weather for the better part of the weekend. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott issued a disaster declaration for all of the state’s 254 counties. Abbott, Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt and Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson each activated National Guard units to assist state agencies with tasks including rescuing stranded drivers.

President Joe Biden also declared an emergency in Texas in a statement Sunday night. The declaration is intended to add federal aid to state and local response efforts.

It’s currently 3° with a wind chill of -15°. The rolling outages were to be in small increments. My entire team who works from home is without power and have been for 5+ hours. Nothing rolling about it.

My inlaws from MN each winter escape the cold for Port Aranzas. Currently they report 18 degrees, no power. Icy roads. Stuck in cold condo.

They can’t run in freezing rain. The blades will get out of balance and May break. When they shut them down they will start using electricity from the grid to keep the alternators and gears warm and dry.

I blame people with frickin’ heat pumps. My neighbors heat pump screams all winter.

Natural gas, people. Texas is floating on it. My electricity was $89 for January for 5,000 sqft.

Heat pumps are for Florida or San Diego.

Currently 8 in Dallas. 1 son without power. Another son in Lubbock is 2 but with power. We’re a balmy 15 in El Paso....

Luckily, my Co-Op in the this area uses Nat Gas powerplants, so we still have steady power out here.

Same in Austin. Would like to see the records of rolling power outages for the areas and how long they stayed in each area, including the areas with politician’s homes.

It is certainly past time that this and other deficiencies in "green energy" need to be revisited.
Rather than bolster the existing power grid with gas-turbine, coal fired, or nuclear power, each more reliable on a
continuous basis than the 'renewable' plants, the grid is eroded with vacuous replacements and additions.

The Democrat/Communist establishment, just like all of its foreign socialist brothers in tyranny,
cares nothing for the comfort, health and viability of its serfs -
they are expendable to the greater paradigm of Mother 'Erf!

My cousin lives in Granbury. It’s 5 degrees there, and she’s without power, as well.

That kind of cold in Texas is colder than cold. No one is used to or prepared for it.

We had 31” of snow last week here in the northeast. It was cold and has stayed cold. We’ll be having an ice storm tonight / tomorrow.

We’re in Missouri. Have a back up Generac that starts 60 seconds after the power goes down and a backup to that with a free standing propane heater that works on batteries. Two 500 gallon propane tanks too.

When Hurricane Sandy took out power etc across the NYC metro area, my block had power, miraculously. I had a generator and gallons of gas, all of which I didn't need. The wifi was gone however. As our home turned into a refugee camp providing hot meals, coffee, shower facilities, hot water and heat for friends and family, we all lamented the loss of wifi.

No wonder we disappoint God.
