The kids aren't alright

PITTSBURGH — One year ago, Lena Carson was pulling straight A's at the city's Creative and Performing Arts School across the river from her parent's home. She also swam every day at the local YMCA in preparation to compete at the annual state competition and enjoyed the everyday social life of a teenager.

Today, she is sitting at home. Again.

It has been nearly a year since she walked into CAPA, a magnet school she had to earn admission to through a portfolio of her work, and interacted with her teachers or friends.

Her daily swims are gone, along with her social life. Her outside activities have diminished to walking the dog around the block.

In the beginning, like most teenagers, she thought of it as an extended snow day. When days turned to weeks, what started as an escape from school went from fun to dread. "In the beginning, I was like, I have this time off, it's going to be so fun, and now going to school is all I want," she said.

A bright student who skipped a grade, her straight A's have dipped to D's, and Lena says she struggles to complete assignments, not because she can't but because of the lost will. "I have nothing to look forward to," she said

Lena says online school is not challenging in the same way, "It's not pushing me at all the same way that regular school does."

Her voice drops when asked how much she wants to go back to school, "Very badly. That's the main thing I want. I think it would make things a lot better. I think I would just be happier in general, probably."

"I have nothing to look forward to,"

I've been going through sort of the same thing, during this insane lockdown - even though I'm not someone who goes out or socializes much in the best of times.

We're destroying the lives of an entire generation of school-age kids. Honest future historians are going to have a great time with our era.

Who cares? They were able to defeat Trump, and that’s all that matters.

Online school requires an entirely different mindset than the standard US curriculum.

The teachers don't understand that yet.

Title of a song by The Offspring. Definitely one of the most underrated bands there is.

They're young. Most of them haven't learned or been taught self-discipline.

I would not let this crisis go to waste. Fire every public school teacher. Hand out vouchers. Start up new school systems.

I’m not he most loquacious person you’re ever going to meet. Far from it, actually. But I do miss going into the local watering hole and pulling up a stool an setting a spell.

Conversation popped up as it does in such situations, and I enjoyed it and miss it.

If I “have” to wear a muzzle, I ain’t going.

As far as I’ve heard - and I guess it depends on which state you are in - you can take the mask off if you’re eating - or drinking :-)

Remove the mask, face shields and gloves mandate (it’s by school at the college-level, and district at the elementary/secondary level), and teachers/ faculty will love to come back and teach.

Before that mandate is eliminated, 99% will say no. Wearing that Communist garbage 6 to 8 hours a day is impossible and likewise makes learning impossible. We signed up to teach, not to work in a medical operating room theater.

Seems this mask mandate is going over equally as well with team truck drivers. They are forced to mask nearly 24 hours a day and hate it. Surprised there hasn’t been a strike yet.

I get it. Last year I did 11 straight weeks of teleworking. The first couple were great - reminded me of my consultant days working out of a home office. By about week 5 or 6 I realized I was more ready to retire than I would have ever admitted. January 2020, loved my job, you would have had to drag me away from it. By May, if I could have, I’d have turned in papers. We’re back, to a limited extent, but with even more than the usual Mikey Mouse BS. I’m ready to drop 2 weeks notice most days.

Fire every public school teacher. Hand out vouchers. Start up new school systems.

They still need the teechurz unions for at least the next "election" or two, until the Demoninion/ESS/Smartmatic robots have got the automated "vote" dialed in.

Then woe to the teachers and the blacks in the Big Cities in the swing states...

Yea, you can here in Indy too. But ya got to sit at a table, not pull up a stool at the bar. Different social climate, so to speak. That, and I end up taking some poor waitri’s four top. I tip well for what I spend, but not four top worthy.

No. There are thousands of kids who are 2 and 3 grades ahead because they are learning via the computer because they don't have to deal with disruptive kids in the classroom and they don't have to listen to their teacher spouting political nonsense.

Unfortunately there are thousands of kids who are now 2 and 3 grades behind and the schools have two groups of kids - achievers and non-achievers.

Agreed. After they lift the mask, shield and gloves mandate we are forced to endure. You try wearing that crap while performing your work duties for 8 hours a day.
