Two of my grandchildren should have graduated this spring...one was able to graduate in Dec because of extra online classes but I dont think she has benefitted from the opportunity to leave school earlier ...she would have only had 2 classes this spring so she was able to finish them last year instead...

Her cousin has a different program so she has a more full slate...she goes half the week to school and the other days at home and online...

Both are bright and should have been ready for college this Fall...They both lost 3 months of school in the Spring of their Junior year...and now the part time school thingy...

The father of the first one graduated early from high school and started college at 17 but I dont think his daughter has the same preparation as he had...

The counselors back then did us a disservice by not telling us to become firemen or cops...

Some of us were hard of hearing.

“Unfortunately there are thousands of kids who are now 2 and 3 grades behind“....

Most private schools in this area returned to regular in person teaching in September.

The public schools have not been in session (except for a few stops and starts) for almost a year.

How is that going to work out for generic inner city kid?

Talk about white supremacy...Teacher’s Union say what?

The destruction of a generation of children is something we thought the Leftnicks would do, left to their devices. Now we know we are correct. America’s Leftnicks have got them so screwed up they are taking their own live! And, I bet they are saluting the Chinese for helping them do it.

I watched Mark Levin on “Life Liberty and Levin” interview Thomas Sewell, February 7th, 2021. They discussed charter schools. The teachers’ union have a criminal opposition to charter schools. There are empty school buildings that could be occupied by a charter system in many cities. There are teachers ready to teach in these charter schools. The parents want these charter schools. However the government will not fund such a direction because the elected leaders are funded by the unions. It’s all about money. The unions want their control. The Unions do not want the parents to have any say in their children’s education.

These same unions oppose opening up the schools during the pandemic. The scientific evidence shows it is possible to open up the schools. Even when all the teachers get vaccinated, the unions are moving the goal posts: They want all the students vaccinated too.

“Twenty percent of the country was illiterate. About half of the kids in the country got no education whatsoever.”

My room mate is a 5th grade teacher in a Las Vegas school.

I can tell you the illiteracy rate is likely higher now. And, still, half of kids get no education whatsoever.

20 of 26 could not make change when they entered. 16 of them still cannot.

Her class is 50-50...black and Hispanic.

It was a different world, but the differences were not material to this discussion.

“But the gap is much wider now. “

I agree.

The smart kids are running away with the prize.

The dumb and the unmotivated are regressing.

There’s a strong correlation with ethnicity.

“ I can tell you the illiteracy rate is likely higher now”

You can tell me that, but that doesn’t mean I’d believe you. Did you know that the literacy rate is measured by the number of people OVER 15 who can read and write?

If you believe the 99% reported by the US DOE, that’s on you.

Besides, what’s the relevance to the advent of public, compulsory education, or the lack thereof?

Only that a bunch of people who can’t make change know the alphabet, can read a headline and write their name.

You cannot make smart people, or even average people out of dumb kids.

Why is it you believe kids are being harmed because IN PERSON, classroom instruction is not available to them?

Something available to the masses in only the last 150 years.

And do you think all those dumb kids, or the extended society get any real benefit from it? We know smart kids benefit from education. And we know they excel at remote education too.

Because I’ve seen it first hand. I was tutoring a kid who did well until this stupid lockdown. Remote learning has been a disaster. By the way I have never posted anything supporting mandatory government schools. It would be better if there were none. My response was directed to your comment that “... whole concept of kids being harmed because they can’t go to school is ludicrous on its face.”

That American parents -- out of increasingly irrational fear and cowardice -- have watched placidly as power-obsessed politicians and egomanical unelected bureaucrats (specifically not the Communist Chinese virus) literally steal a year of their child's life ... an eternity to a child. To stop this insanity, parents must begin by dealing with their own!

“Remote learning has been a disaster.”

Only for the dumb and/or unmotivated.

Smart kids EXCEL with it.

The dumb and/or unmotivated never had a chance anyway.

I’ve been watching it first hand as a 5th grade class is taught from my living room. Virtually.

The kid I was tutoring was not dumb but he was unmotivated. He excels at soccer and like many is obsessed with video games. School bores him. Coming from money is also an issue. He needs the structure of the classroom without the ability to play his mother for whatever he wants.

” He needs the structure of the classroom without the ability to play his mother for whatever he wants.”

If that’s what mom permits, he will bring that into every type of classroom he attends.

Only mom can fix that, and no teacher or classroom or method can.

You’re wrong, but that’s okay. It’s a free country.
