Late last night the Supreme Court issued an injunction stopping California’s ban on indoor worship in churches, synagogues, and other houses of worship, that it claimed were dangerous because of the coronavirus.
The Court ruled in two cases, South Bay United Pentecostal Church v. Newsom and Harvest Rock Church v. Newsom. Both churches sued California Governor Gavin Newsom, challenging the state’s total ban on indoor worship services—the most extreme in the nation—which targeted churches for closure while allowing non-essential retail stores such as Macy’s to open to hundreds of customers, as well as hair salons, nail salons, and Hollywood soundstages.
In a 6-3 decision, the Supreme Court enjoined California from enforcing the total ban on worship in the “Blueprint’s” Tier 1 pending disposition of the case at the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and a petition for writ of certiorari to the Supreme Court. A majority held that instead of the total ban, California may impose a 25 percent building capacity limit in Tier 1.Chief Justice John Roberts wrote that “federal courts owe significant deference to politically accountable officials” when it comes to public health restrictions, but he said deference “has its limits.”

A win for religious liberty and freedom of association.
We all know and understand the risk. Let us make our own decisions.
Roberts voted with the conservatives this time I see, as it was a 6-3 decision. How quaint!!!!
Roberts definitely joined the majority so he could write the ruling opinion. He will be doing this a lot I fear.
My church, in California, has been meeting face to face for several weeks. The local Sheriff (small town) has said “screw Newsom” on more than one occasion.
The U.S. Supreme Court in a split decision Friday night ruled that houses of worship in California may hold indoor services at 25% capacity, giving a partial win to groups fighting the state’s coronavirus restrictions, according to reports.
The high court issued the orders in two cases where plaintiffs had sued over restrictions meant to slow the spread of the virus.
The state will be permitted to restrict singing and chanting during services, the court said.
Justices Neil Gorsuch and Clarence Thomas reportedly said they would have lifted all restrictions on churches while the court’s three liberal justices dissented.
Roberts votes really don’t matter anymore.
Therefore he can go back to pretending to be a conservative in hopes we won’t hate him as much anymore.
Roberts is a doosh-bag no matter this decision.
He allowed the theft, in broad daylight, of the executive branch of government.
The Supreme Court has thrown away their moral authority by disallowing evidence of a fraudulent election to be heard.
I am no longer morally obligated to follow anything those slimy lawyers decide.
25% occupancy?
Not sure I’d call that a victory.
Other liberal justices to Roberts: "John, sit down. You don't look well at all. Are you running a fever? I told you not to eat those suspect looking burritos from that street vendor."
It’s a start. All or nothing politics results in our side being net losers. The left has taken freedom after freedom one inch at a time.
We would do well to win wherever we can, however we can, and whatever we can. Then, fight for more.
This was a 2-1-2-1-3 split.
Gorsuch and Thomas would have given the churches everything that they wanted.
Alito almost completely agreed, but would have delayed the start of the injunction.
Barrett and Kavanaugh gave the churches everything that they asked for except for singing and chanting, unless the record could show that the State was treating singing outside of church differently.
Roberts was being his typical straddling the fence, clown self.
The three leftist goons would have given the State everything that they wanted.
The swift sword of justice protecting American rights after only a year of them being trampled on without the judiciary taking a bit of notice.
Don’t expect anything high-minded from those nine people.
Americans don’t like being deprived of their God or their guns.
Everyone can pray, but a church is fellowship and a meeting of the minds and souls.
Over coffee and cookies after the service, people get together and make plans, share ideas, etc.
Wow. Only took you SCOTUS @ssholes a year and after California starts opening up
Recall the incompetent adulterous bastard. Newsome is good for one thing: immorality.
