They are trying to have it both ways by "impeaching" a private citizen. The maximum 'sentence' for a guilty verdict in an impeachment trial is removal from office (Article I, Section III of the Constitution) How do you remove a private citizen from office?
The constitution also states that when the President of the United States is tried, the chief justice of the Supreme Court shall preside as you pointed out.
They will try to say that since Trump is not currently the POTUS, that there is no need to have the chief justice of SCOTUS presiding.
This is political theater at its worst, but the media will present it as the most important legal proceeding in our nation's history.
They are absolutely agitating for a hot civil war so they can move forward with usurping the 2A.
If by some chance they were to convict him there would be a huge case for the SC. And they would just about have to take it and rule it unconstitutional. He gets cleared of it about 3 years. The truth comes out and he runs again and gets 85 million votes..

Right. And the Supreme Court has traditionally let the Senate do its own thing. So if the Senate picks Leahy to preside, the USSC would probably just let it be.
Heck, the USSC would probably be okay with the Senate picking Hillary Clinton to run the trial.
Doesnt matter. He was impeached when he was president.
Therefore, he has to be tried as if he was still president.

He isn’t? I say he is. See tagline. He was legally elected, was he not? The fact he was deposed under false and illegal actions does not negate actual facts.
And the fact that a Senate hearing to remove the President can only mean they actually also consider him a legitimate president adds credibility to what we already know:
Biden is a false puppet placed in power, but Trump is still our president.
They can also reverse the “impeachment”
Regardless - Trump has a good case of taking this to the Supreme Court for an illegal bill of attainder for this kangaroo court action.
The United States Constitution. Art. 1, Sec. 9, states, "No Bill of Attainder or ex post facto Law shall be passed." In Art. 1, Sec. 10, even states are forbidden from passing any Bill of Attainder.
Of course, the Demonicrats have long despised and disregarded the U.S. Constitution.

I always thought Grover Cleveland looked shifty. Please add him to your list. And I think we’re on firm legal ground here. The Constitution does not specify that the impeached person be alive.
