Incoming Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg has suggested taxing Americans for the number of miles they drive, a policy he endorsed as a Democratic presidential candidate.
The Biden Administration is actively searching for ways to fund its ambitious $1 trillion infrastructure plan.
Buttigieg, the former mayor of South Bend, Ind., acknowledged "privacy concerns" related to implementing a vehicle miles traveled (VMT) system but said it should be considered as a potential replacement for the gas tax.

Triple HA! They will say that to get passed then it will never happen. Lucy/Football/Charlie
Not a replacement, but in addition to any gas tax.
Of course, everybody is going to be driving fuel-cell or rechargeable battery-powered vehicles in a few years, so gasoline will phased out.
This scheme might work in Oregon or California, but I do not see it as viable in Montana or Tennessee for many years yet. Those places, they keep their vehicles running for YEARS beyond normal replacement cycles.
>>I don’t see red states agreeing to this.<<
I’ll have to see the fight it before I believe it. Seems to me as of right now the Republican Party has declared unconditional surrender.
DITCH MITCH!!!!!!
They are forcing us to buy a car with the size of golf cart, which reduces the size of new road infrastructure, which, in turn, reduces the cost of repairing them.
Besides, this also fits their environment agenda.
And that is precisely why they are doing it. No meat for YOU, BOOMER!
You are uncommonly perceptive. OF COURSE there will be a GPS tracker put on ever vehicle on the road, much like the system now used by GM cars already, the OnStar, now on a subscription plan, but made compulsory for everybody, with command center then a government agency.
And you thought it was just the street cameras they had trained on you.
Most of these Biden voters don’t pay taxes. Their parents
cover their bills, or they are getting some form of government support.
Now, if you really want to hit them where it hurts...
Every time a new tax is implemented, you reduce Welfare by that same percentage.
You will immediately hear the loudest screeching sound you’ve
ever heard from sea to shining sea.
How dare you raise taxes, and lower our EBT card payments?
When they have skin in the game, which they always demand,
they’ll finally ‘get it’.
Uh oh you hit on the real reason for this. Tracking.
Stop that subversive talk. It could lead to violence.
No dissent. No resistance is futile.
See you in the camps.
Gas prices already up in my area....so what follows is higher costs on everything!
The Biden Crime Family wants your money one way or another...and they’ll pass it on to the other crime families in due time.
Chocolate highway is the only thing this fool knows about transportation.
You have to plug your Tesla in, and since the DeeperDemos are going to eliminate conventional electric generation, the cost of charging your Tesla or Volt or Leaf or whatever will “necessarily skyrocket..”
And now the government knows where you are at all times ...
We had a 4 year reprieve....and we’ve now past the thresh-hold of saving this country or reversing it...you can’t save a country when half the people don’t want to and prefer to take you down and out.....However, God would not have allowed this take over of our government to those of depraved minds at this time unless He knew that we could handle it as long as we lean on Him.
It’s not like Biden said he’d lower taxes. I never saw anything like it:
Biden: “I’m gonna raise your taxes”
crowd: “YAY
And then they vote rat in GA because they want the 2k the rats were promising/bribing?
Too many stupid people in this country!
At the moment, it is a futile exercise to convince them that we are having a crisis.
Most retired people I know drive more
Debit card sales at gas stations?
Fight dat climate....what foolishness people fall for.
The gas tax you already pay is based on the miles you drive. You drive twice the miles as me, you pay twice the tax (assuming the same car mileage). But if I drive a heavy vehicle that damages the road more, I get worse mileage and pay more tax (offsetting the road damage).
The existing system works well. The only flaw is it is based on ICE powered vehicles.
All they have to do is pass a “road use tax” on EVs to make them pay for the roads. If you drive an EV, you pay that tax. Hybrid cars would pay the same tax at a reduced rate because they are paying some gas tax.
So, all we need is a Hybrid and EV tax to make things fair.
