Blumenthal: Impeachment Trial ‘Can Happen in Days, Not Weeks’ — Evidence ‘Open and Shut’

Friday, Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) sounded off on the House sending over the article of impeachment citing President Donald Trump with inciting the riot at the U.S. Capitol earlier this month.

Blumenthal said on “CNN Newsroom” that the evidence of Trump inciting the riot is “pretty open and shut” given his speech and tweets leading up to and following the chaos that ultimately left five dead and others injured. With House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) set to send over the article of impeachment on Monday, Blumenthal said the trial “can happen in days, not weeks.”

They're playing with words by saying "former" president. Therefore, it sounds ok because the word "president" is used.

The specific question to ask is...under what authority does the Senate have to hold a trial of a private citizen and to either convict or acquit that private citizen?

At the time of trial, he is a private citizen.

They have zero authority to hold a trial of a private citizen.

He’s a private citizen and cannot be removed from office. The Constitution is very clear on Impeachment:

The Senate shall have the sole Power to try all Impeachments. When sitting for that Purpose, they shall be on Oath or Affirmation. When the President of the United States is tried, the Chief Justice shall preside: And no Person shall be convicted without the Concurrence of two thirds of the Members present.

Judgment in Cases of Impeachment shall not extend further than to removal from Office, and disqualification to hold and enjoy any Office of honor, Trust or Profit under the United States: but the Party convicted shall nevertheless be liable and subject to Indictment, Trial, Judgment and Punishment, according to Law.

The disqualification clause is directly tied to removal. Any pubie who votes for this will be primaried.

Remember when Trump said, “This is a movement, I’m telling you. They’re not going to stop. And everyone beware, because they’re not going to stop. They’re not going to stop before Election Day in November, and they’re not going to stop after Election Day. They want to ensure that Trump cannot run in 2024. Unfortunately a lot of GOP Senators might be tempted to vote guilty just for that reason...although for most of them it would be committing political suicide.

Since the Democrats would be in control, they can rule out any evidence that Trump might try to enter as to the break-in being pre-planned by radicals (who were only posing as pro-Trump types) or that hte break-in happened before anyone who listened to his speech could have reached the Capitol.

Damn, what an administration

Known, admitted Plagiarist and Briber as pResident, known liar in a position of authority, and so many firsts - being named just to appease and we are in deep Kimchi.

I am waiting for the rumblings of only one ‘name your ‘freak’’ crowd wanting a 2nd and 3rd just to prove hidenbiden is serious.

We may have a government that knows not a whit of what they do BUT all freak/side shows will be represented.

I seem to remember Wanda Sikes saying right after the BO ‘win’ that he better do well or it will be another 150 years before one of ‘us’ gets to that level again.

Rat leadership, socialists with lots of Alinsky indoc, are extremely devious, as well as seditious. They are much more formidable than the average PUB nabob. IMO, this impeachment redux is also aimed at PUB leadership and party unity. Anything less than full Pub senate support for Trump will bring them farther over the white-hot coals of conservative disgust. The way Rats see it, they can't loose.
