They want to ensure that Trump cannot run in 2024. Unfortunately a lot of GOP Senators might be tempted to vote guilty just for that reason...although for most of them it would be committing political suicide.

Since the Democrats would be in control, they can rule out any evidence that Trump might try to enter as to the break-in being pre-planned by radicals (who were only posing as pro-Trump types) or that hte break-in happened before anyone who listened to his speech could have reached the Capitol.
