“It’s no understatement to say that the nation is facing a mental health pandemic”..
Experts in the fields of health, academia and charity have warned that the lockdown in the UK is creating a runaway pandemic of anxiety and depression.
Paul Farmer, chief executive of the mental health charity Mind said “It’s no understatement to say that the nation is facing a mental health pandemic.”
The charity has seen a massive increase in visits to its website, with unprecedented volumes of calls to helplines that deal with issues ranging from self harm to suicide.
“It’s clear that our mental health is deteriorating across the board – from mild mental health problems right through to those reaching crisis point and even having to be hospitalised,” Farmer further commented.
Dr Adrian James, president of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, further warned “We’re in an unprecedented mental health crisis. Social isolation, loneliness, stress and anxiety, domestic abuse, bereavement, financial difficulties, unemployment and severe Covid-19 infection are all factors that have led to an increase in workload for mental health services.”
“Patients are experiencing more severe symptoms, and psychiatrists are seeing an increase in both emergency and urgent presentations compared to last year,” James noted.
Emma Thomas, CEO of YoungMinds, a parents helpline, said “The pandemic is deepening the crisis in young people’s mental health and there is a growing body of evidence suggesting that the impact could be significant and long-term.”
“Young people tell us that they’ve struggled to cope with the changes and loss of coping mechanisms brought on by the pandemic, with many experiencing social isolation, anxiety, and fears around their future,” Thomas noted.
University of Nottingham Professor Ellen Townsend, who has conducted extensive research into self-harm noted “We know that suicide ideation increased in young people in the first UK lockdown. There was a worrying signal that suicides in young people increased during the first lockdown.”
“We know that loneliness, social isolation, mental health issues have soared in young people,” she added.
Child behaviour expert Elizabeth O’Shea also warned that the lockdowns have “created a mental health ticking time bomb.”
Experts previously warned that lockdowns are a “panic measure” and a “monumental mistake on a global scale.”
“I believe the harm lockdown is doing to our education, health care access, and broader aspects of our economy and society will turn out to be at least as great as the harm done by COVID-19,” Infectious diseases expert and University of Edinburgh professor Mark Woolhouse has urged, noting “the cure was worse than the disease.”
Prior to the pandemic, there was already a suicide epidemic. Since the lockdowns, hospitals have reported an explosion in suicides and intentional injury.
They are creating thousands of Timothy McVeighs.
This has been screamed about for months. It will come as little surprise to many when the country starts opening up in earnest next month despite “rising” COVID-19 deaths and “overrun” hospitals.
They’ve been handing out scrips for SNRI’s and SSRI’s since April 2020. In essence, they’re killing people and it’s not from the virus. Get in line non essential, non vaccinated BOHICA!
Joe is going to wave his magic wand and get things back to normal. That whole lockdown thing? Oh, that was Trump’s fault!
Awful for Liberals cause THEY had a real head start on mental illness
Yeah. I couldn’t believe Cuomo Monday mewling about how New York has to be reopened soon, and acting like he had nothing to do with it being closed in the first place.
One look at the Democrat party should convince anyone of that.
And bored little BLM / Antifa rioters....
One thing we FReepers can do for our nation is remain sane. I think it is mostly leftists who are giving in to the paranoia and complying with the soul destroying aspects of the lockdown. Let’s not do that. May the sane run the asylum.
“Duh!” And you guys can quote me.
Mental health, physical health, economic health ... all of the “healths”.
Too many people are sacrificing mental health over physical health due to the fear porn.
I was on a work related Zoom that was so awful due to depressing attitudes and the occasional moral superiority for being that depressed. Wouldn’t be surprised if at least one person doesn’t come back to work in the end due to alcoholism or paranoia.
I’ve been on a real vacay (safely). That gave me such a boost I can’t explain it and hope to go again in April. I get out with a friend once a week. I get outside everyday even if it’s a walk to the corner. I usually can encounter 3 or 4 people, smile and say hello. It makes a difference! I exercise everyday. I go to church. I visit select family. I have been to a party or two.
I do avoid Wal-mart (LOL).
When I get judged over my “risky” behavior, I say, “This week it was worth the physical health risk to maintain my mental health.” Sadly, most people still think they are doing better than me by sitting on their sofa binge watching shows and eating contact free carry out.
In the UK? Hmmm.
‘They’ve been handing out scrips for SNRI’s and SSRI’s since April 2020.’
proper usage of both of those is not going to kill anybody; and gross abuse of anything, even something so benign as herbal teas, can have highly deleterious effects...
Yup,lock down gave us Antifa,BLM and a population of Karens. The trio has successfully destroyed the nation as we know it and we really never raised a hand against any of them. It gave the excuse for the left and NeverTrumps to comitt the most massive vote fraud and coup against America. Mission accomplished.
Just telling what they’re prescribing en masse. The scripts are prescribed as evidence of serious depression. The despair, the hopelessness, and the fear is killing.
A search of “SSRIs and mass shootings” might give you pause.
I have been living my life to the hilt since week one, no apologies.
Yes, some things have been curtailed or changed. I had to switch churches, a great personal loss for me. I have to wear masks (sometimes) to shop and at work - I won’t anywhere else. I have found the occasional place that lets me have a face. I can’t eat in restaurants. Some elderly in my family won’t let me see them.
Whatever. I work. I go to church. I travel. I get medical care. Visit people. I hosted a big Christmas. I make no apology for it. I am not a vector and have done nothing to deserve quarantine, house arrest, or excommunication.
All over the world.
