t may contain the “Crossroads of the World,” but Mayor Bill de Blasio said Friday that Manhattan is “not the center of our universe.”
Only about 10 percent of Manhattan office workers were back as of Sept. 18, more than six months after the coronavirus pandemic upended life in the Big Apple, the Wall Street Journal had reported, citing data from commercial real estate services firm CBRE Group Inc.
“When Mayor de Blasio makes dismissive comments about the dire lack of commercial activity in Midtown, he’s really dismissing the needs of hundreds of thousands of everyday New Yorkers who will remain unemployed or struggling until that activity returns,” said James Whelan, president of the Real Estate Board of New York.
Kathryn Wylde, head of the Partnership for New York City, a leading business group representing 300 CEOs, said the “irony” is “that the economy of Manhattan’s Central Business Districts is operating remotely, but at full steam.”
“The office buildings are empty but people are still employed and revenues are flowing. On the other hand, the neighborhood commercial districts have a lot of activity, but they are running on zero margins and piling up debt during the rent moratorium,” Wylde said.
City Councilman Keith Powers (D-Manhattan) said, “The mayor’s failure to recognize Midtown’s central role in the city’s economic recovery is concerning.”
“For tens of thousands of New Yorkers out of a job — from Broadway to the hotel industry — Midtown’s comeback is inextricably tied to the city’s recovery,” the politician said.

Looking at Times Square at nearly 2pm in the afternoon and I’d say the mayor may be right

Ain’t hardly a soul there.
In fact, you can count the number of pigeons outnumbering humans...
New York’s mayor doesn’t follow a “Manhatten First” policy?
Well...me, neither.
Mayor de Blasio disses Manhattan: Midtown is ‘not center of universe’
I left East 67th Street for good in 1980, and it is correct that Manhattan is not the center of the universe.
But if you are the mayor of New York City, it's pretty damn important.
OF COURSE Manhattan isn’t the center of the universe.
Luckenbach, Texas is.
LOL
“Hey, buddy, could you spare a workin’ pigeon some popcorn?”
That’s right.
Because Manhattan is why tourist come.
No Manhattan, no dinero from visitors
This is having a bad impact everywhere — the cockroaches that escape NYC are infecting every other state now, bringing their failed politics with them to help destroy other communities.
What, tourist don’t flock to Bed-Sty?
The NY Mayor who hates NY.
*Bed-Stuy...
It reminds me of an old Bill Maildin comic.
“The hell this ain’t the most important hole in the world! I’M IN IT!”
Well even a broken clock is right twice a day.

I’ve never seen a group more incapable of grasping economics,
than these incredibly ignorant Leftists.
Where do they think their revenue comes from?
The modern version of “Let them eat cake!”
ha!
Really tired of seeing NYC articles. No pity for them. The voters wanted this otherwise they would have voted for a republican.
DeBlasio’s biggest problem is that he is a true ideologue. He believes his own propaganda.
He is in the process of driving NY City off a cliff.
And then you get the articles about landlords crying that no one can afford or willing to pay the $5,000 a month rent for a broom closet.
Too bad.
