BULVERDE, Texas Texas Republicans remain bullish that President Trump will repeat his 2016 win here next week. But they warn the party nonetheless has a lot of work to do in the coming years as Democrats continue to make inroads across the state, especially in suburban areas.
For two cycles now, Texas Republicans have watched as Democrats picked off long-held GOP House seats in the Dallas and Houston suburbs, with the minority party continuing to go on offense in a number of seats few saw as possible pick-up opportunities years ago. This has set off alarm bells for party leaders, who warn that they have to right the ship before it is too late.
"The party's got some work to do, and the reason they've got work to do is when you win the national championship every year year after year after year you get complacent," former Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) told The Hill in an interview.
"I think the Republican Party in Texas over the last 10 years ... got complacent," Perry continued, taking some responsibility for the situation, as he was governor from 2000 to 2014. "You didn't build the structure that you need. You didn't go recruit the bench that you need to continue to be a strong team."

Drudge...disgrace...got it.
What’s Drudge?
Believe this ... the Dems are hell-bent on turning Texas. They are throwing money and candidates out with no end in sight. Vote ... vote ... vote!!! Do NOT sit out any elections ever.
The Democrats have a huge double digit deficit to make up there.
Well GOP, it’s about damned time you started getting rid of your lying RINO Cornyn. I know he’s a good ‘ol boy, but that is why you keep having these nail biters. Get a decent candidate who stand with and for the people and just maybe everyone could sleep at night and stop worrying about the Marxist ankle biters.
Do NOT think it can't happen in Texas over time.
Drudge, Onion, whats the diff. Neither source credible.
Texas has spent the past 30 years attracting out-of-state businesses to relocate there for lower taxes and a more business friendly environment.
Lots of out-of-state workers moved into the state as a result. People who have not changed their politics. As a result, all the major urban areas in Texas are now socialist.
This is a monster of Texas own making.
The advice is the same as in AZ.
Stop listening to anyone associated with the Bush Family, the vast list of McCain advisors or anyone on the Chamber of Commerce.
Then start cleaning house.
Cornyn doesn’t appear to be in any trouble for re-election.
The rats are indeed spending millions on TV ads. I seriously doubt these candidates have grass-roots organizations with that much money. This is Hollywood and Soros money flooding the airwaves.
And this is accomplished not by changing Texan's minds, but by outnumbering them with replacement immigrants from other Socialist states and countries...
Aside from the obvious high stakes that are on the line this election, I will be very interested on how the vote by demographic turns out through out tbe traditionally Red South. I saw on a local forum a post that the Trump tax cuts, especially the SALT limitations, has fueled Democrat migration from the north to the south. Will that sway Georgia, Texas, even South Carolina?
I don't disagree with that...complacency is a very bad thing. Do not assume a deep blue state can't be flipped back...it may take years, even decades of work, but never give up. WI, MI, PA and ME-2 are examples of this from 2016. Also, never assume a deep red state will stay that way - keep working every day to keep it that way. Look at Virginia. It went Republican more than some other southern states that are now solidly red, while it has flipped.
Every 4 years these things come out , sort of like jeepers creepers
Texas will turn blue
Republicans will steal your health care
Republicans will take away your ss
I think the Republican Party in Texas over the last 10 years ... got complacent,” Perry continued..
You mean when a couple of governors ran all over California and New York beefing every business they could find to relocate to Texas? The damned idiot is the classic capitalist who sells the rope intended to hang him with. Perry did more than anyone to destroy Texas.
Recent polling (Richard Baris) shows first generation Texans MORE conservative than 3rd generation Texans. The majority coming here are conservative.
I completely agree with you.
Ive been thinking for a while that once Cornyn retires, they should have Dan Crenshaw run for the seat
