A Suburban Mom’s View of the 2020 Election
Townhall.com ^ | October 12, 2020 | Kimberly Fletcher

Everyone from campaigns to pundits are salivating over the new coveted voter base—suburban women. Media outlets from Fox News to CNN have repeatedly questioned what message will resonate with those suburban moms and which political party will win them. Ironically, I have yet to see one media outlet asking a single suburban mom what she thinks. As one of those suburban moms, leading a national organization made up almost entirely of suburban moms, let me help with your dilemma.

Moms have been the center of every election in the last two decades. We’ve been given many titles—soccer moms, security moms, hockey moms, and now suburban women. The fact is, you don’t need the suburban women vote, you need the mom vote because that’s largely who suburban women are; and all moms care about the same three things. We want our children to be safe, we want them to get a good education and we want them to have opportunities to succeed. How we feel our children will achieve those things may differ based on our own perspective and personal experiences, but the basic concerns are the same.

In 15 years of working with moms across America what we’ve learned is the vast majority of conservative women of faith aren’t voting. In fact, most aren’t even registered to vote. Why? Because moms don’t like politics and politicians have no idea how to talk to us. If you want to reach suburban moms—or any moms for that matter—you can start by talking to us and not at us. Give us a reason to vote—something to hope for, believe in and fight for. Talk to us about what we care about.

So, what are the issues moms care about this election? Six months ago, I would have told you it was open sex co-ed bathrooms and locker rooms being forced on their children’s schools, or Planned Parenthood’s comprehensive sex education posing pornography as curriculum; or biological boys competing in girls’ sports. All those issues were high on moms’ radar because they threatened our children’s safety and opportunities.

Today, however, those concerns have taken back seat to the issues smacking us in the face every day. In just a few short months we went from "should we wear a mask?" to "how can I pay my rent?" We want to know when things will ever get back to "normal" while trying to remember what that normal was. We are tired of media lies and most of us have turned off the news to preserve our sanity. We are fed up with things like face masks and viruses becoming political issues and violent, destructive riots being labeled "peaceful protests." We are afraid for our children’s safety, our family’s future, and our country’s survival.

Moms want order restored, civility returned, and the violence to stop. We want media and politicians to stop dividing us with lies and rhetoric for political gain. We want to know why elected officials aren’t leading; why they aren’t protecting our homes, businesses and neighborhoods; and why they condone and even encourage lawlessness while vilifying the police officers sworn to protect us. We want to shout from the rooftops, “The emperor is wearing no clothes,” hoping commonsense will prevail and sanity will be restored.

The political conventions painted a clear image of the big picture, what’s at stake, and what we’re fighting for. If you want to win over the suburban moms, keep sharing those inspiring speeches from the Republican Convention, the president’s March for Life speech where he called moms heroes and the visual highlights of what this administration has done from protecting life to rescuing hostages. Talk to us, infuse us with hope, focus on the big picture and you will win us over.

The suburban white mom’s biggest nightmare = being called a racist if they don’t vote for Joe.

When I read ‘civility’ I hear ‘cheese-eating, surrender monkey in my mind. My advice to quislings with the vapors is to fight for you rights or shut up and get out of the way.

apologize for the vanity, but I believe it’s important and something that I don’t see discussed. We have to convince people who will not vote for President Trump to not vote.

The people that I am speaking to who despise Trump are voting against him, and not for Joe Biden. We need to convince evangelicals and suburban women that it’s okay NOT to vote. There are many evangelicals these days, and I work in this space, who refuse to vote for President Trump because they think he is a jerk. They despised Hillary so they were willing to vote for Trump, and they didn’t have four years of media telling them they are evil for supporting President Trump. These individuals are more likely to vote for pro-abortion Biden because they think he is a kind, harmless man, very unlike Hillary. We know how idiotic that is, but that sentiment is very real. The people need to be convinced that they are better off not voting than voting for Biden, not because it will get the result they want but because it’s the moral decision if they can’t vote for President Trump.

The pro-Trump supporters will vote no matter what. We need to convince the “hold your nose and vote for Biden” voters that the Godly thing to do is to just not vote at all and continue to ask if they think a Harris presidency is going to further the Kingdom. Deep down they know that answer. A bit “I’m not voting and that’s okay” movement could be incredibly significant.

Not sure this is at all new. What were “Soccer Moms” in prior elections? My research says that this term dates from 1996. Methinks this is more campaign consultant talk, repackaging to sell to the anxious candidates!

Trump really needs to push the law and order message with suburbia. Kamala bailing out rioters, etc.

Agreed, a vote for Biden is a vote for Bernie & Socialism. A vote for Biden is a vote against your children's education. A vote for Biden is a vote for bad foreign policy.

Unfortunately the truth hurts. We have Democrats wreaking havoc all over the country because of women. That’s it. Fact. Women, in the majority, vote D and we are reaping the whirlwind. Sucks. I’m lucky to have married one of the few reliable Republican female voters in the entire state of Massachusetts

FTA: ...the vast majority of conservative women of faith aren’t voting. In fact, most aren’t even registered to vote.

~~~~~~
Well, then, those women are not too bright. Perhaps they shouldn’t vote.
The women she’s talking about who don’t vote, merit no consideration. Those same women probably gave us Clinton and Obama. Just more bloviating from a section of the non-voting public who want to be heard everywhere except from the ballot box. A waste of time. Kind of like the non-existent youth vote.
Assuming these people weren’t going to vote for Trump, fine. But if their choice is between grudgingly voting for Trump or not voting at all, there needs to be an attempt to get them to vote. The less who vote for Trump means less that the DEMs have to manufacture via fraud.
This cognitive dissonance between policies that they ALL want, but "ORANGE MAN BAD!!" gets in the way of a truly informed voter ...
... is the proof of the "emotions over facts" with a large portion of the current American voters.
This is the problem with suburban women voters, expecting civility in political discourse is like waiting for "Prince Charming", reality is not a fairy tale ....
This isn't about crumpets and tea. She's talking about actual civility: public manners. When that goes, fights and killings and tyranny are around the corner.
I was old enough in the 1960s to watch the hippies bring the nation from dressing weird and long hair, to in-your-face informality, to rudeness in the name of politics, to a violent crime explosion, to totalitarian violence--all in the space of less than a decade.
Lack of civility is a deliberate tool in the Communist playbook: Destroy the existing order through bizarre protest behavior whose real purpose is to destroy public manners, to create chaos; then erect your police state out of people's desperation for safety.
I look at it this way. Southern towns are notoriously polite. Civility is a sign that people are confident, relaxed, and armed.
I have recently convinced 2 women who otherwise wouldn’t have voted for Trump, to actually vote FOR him, and not to abstain from voting at all.
They have realized that they weren’t being told the truth - about Trump or his accomplishments. They also realized they weren’t being told the truth about Biden or his non-accomplishments.
I am hoping that it will become more apparent even in the popular vote, that Trump is the right man for the job.
“There are many evangelicals these days, and I work in this space, who refuse to vote for President Trump because they think he is a jerk.”
Really? How do you define “evangelical”? I see zero correlation among the evangelicals I know. Mostly know baptists and non-denominational believers.
The soccer moms of 2020.
Breaking decidedly for Biden and Democrats.
I am having a hard deciding if this woman is a Democrat or a Republican.
Maybe that’s the problem, in a nutshell.
“What the F*ck do these women want???”
And I can say that because I am a suburban woman with two now-grown children and I know exactly what I want: Four more years with President Trump and Vice President Pence.
The dilemma is that shallow-thinking folks think that because cities burning down “happened under Trump” and rank violence bleeding into the suburbs “happened under Trump” and CV-19 “happened under Trump” that somehow all these things are Trump’s doing, or fault. This is the media message, 24/7. To the extent it works—it works. To the extent that the author of this piece claims now she and her ilk are now worried about paying their rent/mortgage and keeping their neighborhoods safe so they can raise their kids...they’re either lying or not thinking it through. And I don’t understand that. They’re not stupid, they’re the victims and targets of relentless propaganda that plays upon their emotions. But why they believe *anything* Biden & co might have done would have cut the CV-19 death count is defective thinking. Why they might believe that Biden would have acted to stanch the violence in the streets, when he and Kamala have scarcely even criticized same; this I do not understand either.
