Gov. Abbott proposes felonies for rioting, causing injury or destroying property

Gov. Greg Abbott proposed legislation Thursday that, if approved, could make certain actions during protests a felony, including destroying property and aiding or abetting an organization that takes part in a riot.

Abbott made the proposals after a volatile summer in many cities across the country and in Texas which led to major demonstrations and destruction of businesses, including in Downtown Dallas, following the death of George Floyd.

“The Constitution does not provide the right to riot, to rob, to loot, to set fires, to physically harm anyone or anything,” Abbott said at a noon news conference in Dallas.

Protestors or rioters who block hospital entrances could face a felony and mandatory jail time. That hasn’t happened in Texas, but in California, a handful of protesters were blocking emergency entrances and exits to a hospital last week where two sheriff's deputies were wounded, according to the Associated Press.

Abbott said striking a law enforcement officer during a riot, including throwing bottles, bricks or other projectiles, would lead to a mandatory jail sentence of at least six months. Assault on a public servant is already a felony.

Good.

The Fox roundup of several cities’ violent riots (”protests” over Brionna death) included “no arrests were made” after saying a block of stores and restaurants were sprayed with red paint, cars were stopped on highways and streets and cars surrounded by chanting protesters, people were shoved and threatened at several restaurants and so on.

No arrests? Then how can they deny the pushback anger coming? We need the Old West law enforcement or else posses are coming soon.

Exactly!

IMO < that’s part of the problem. Some of these folks act
as if rioting, looting, beating people, intimidation tactics
and things like that are not illegal already.

Take action. There are a myriad of crimes these people are
committing. Buy a clue...

..... aiding or abetting an organization that takes part in a riot.

What ever happened to that old "One Riot, One Ranger" philosophy once famous here in Texas?

FL Gov Ron DeSantis is proposing a bill to make it a felony when a group of 7+ cause property damage or personal injury or block public roads. To no one's surprise the article included the near-obligatory referral to fears of the Governors proposal violating the "protestor's civil rights".

As for me, I'd rely on the old anti-KKK law about wearing face masks equaling a felony. That will make it a 'twofer' in my view!

Not sure about that. We sure as heck had a spike in cases in July. I know that for an absolute fact. And restaurants are open practicing safety. I see no issue

It would be totally ignored in democrat states. If the local PD won’t cooperate, how are you going to bring them to justice?

Democrats WANT the riots, the arson, the assaults, the killings.

I see a huge issue in that because Dallas, Harris, Bexar and Travis counties have a lot of cases, he is applying the same standard to rural counties. The lockdowns should be on a county by county basis. This one size fits all approach is killing small businesses in fly over country counties.

In be ar the restaurants are open. They reopened in July and there was a resurgence.

I’ve seen cases of relatively healthy young people with their butts kicked so to speak. Got it in bars, at parties.

I know it takes a toll on people financially but it is a problem virus.
