Emphasizing that California must stay at the forefront of the fight against climate change, Gov. Gavin Newsom on Wednesday issued an executive order to restrict new car sales in the state to only zero-emission vehicles by 2035 ***
Under Newsoms order, the California Air Resources Board would implement the phase-out of new gas-powered cars and light trucks and also require medium and heavy-duty trucks to be zero-emission by 2045 where possible. California would be the first state in the nation to mandate 100% zero-emission vehicles, though 15 countries already have committed to phasing out gas-powered cars.
*** Cars, trucks and other vehicles are the largest emitters of greenhouse gases in California, accounting for about 40% of the statewide total, and their emissions have been stubbornly creeping upward in recent years. Driving down transportation pollution remains the states biggest challenge in achieving its goal of slashing planet-warming emissions 40% below 1990 levels by 2030.
Under current regulations, Californias Air Resources Board requires automakers to sell electric, fuel cell and other zero-emission vehicles in increasing percentages through 2025. Electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles accounted for 7.6% new car
This is the most impactful step our state can take to fight climate change, Newsom said in a statement released Wednesday morning. Our cars shouldnt make wildfires worse and create more days filled with smoky air. Cars shouldnt melt glaciers or raise sea levels threatening our cherished beaches and coastlines.
Newsom said that Californias action will help spur greater innovation for zero-emission vehicles and, by creating a huge market, will drive down the cost of those cars and trucks. More than 1.63 million new cars and trucks are expected to be sold in the state in 2020, according to the California New Car Dealers Assn.

By fiat!
Newsom is going national in 2024. Democrats will be over their minority obsession and back to their more typical longing for a Kennedy/Clinton-style pretty boy Prince. Newsom has been groomed for that role for three decades.
Hell, they can’t keep the lights on now, how they gonna fuel electric vehicles????*ROFL*
Gruesome the Tyrant just added gas to the Recall Fire.
Ten bucks says that he doesn’t have the authority.
Raising horses might become a profitable venture in CA ... then again, I’m sure horse farts would be as objectionable as gasoline powered vehicles. The way things are going, Fred Flintstone style vehicles may become the norm.
He should also try ‘ordering’ the tides to stop. Take a lesson from King Canute.
The 9th Circuit has been reformed with a lot of Trump appointed Judges.
Disaster for many reasons.
Emergency vehicles need petroleum products to run. Electricity won’t hack it. Snow plows. Tow trucks. Tractor trailer trucks. Back up power supplies.
It will destroy the gasoline industry. It’s illegal. The government doesn’t have the right to do this.
A few years from now the government will be mandating that everyone over 75 die, and it will make it happen. Some people will be wondering how we got to that point. The answer is gradually. The fascists take one piece at a time until they have the whole thing. Then it’s gone, and you can’t get any of it back. You should have stopped them at the first piece.
Well, I guess thatll take care of those wildfires....
Everything’s working so well for the Calitards and they continue to double down! And will continue to blame everyone and everything for their continued failures.
All while decimating their power grid.
Next an executive order to cut CO2 emissions by ordering everyone to wear a rubber mask.
I'm not sure how many electric cars Fiat makes. ;-)
On the other hand, they do have a nice sports car:
Will zero admissions include the production of the E-power that charges E-vehicles ? (ie. coal or nuclear) Not to mention the toxic production and waste of battery production.
I doubt gas or hydrogen can do the job by then .
This is irrelevant. It’s a recomendation because only battery power is feasible, imho, and that needs coal.
