Bahrain to normalise ties with Israel, Israeli media say
Reuters ^ | September 11, 2020 | Reuters Staff

The Gulf state of Bahrain is to normalise relations with Israel, the diplomatic correspondent for Israel’s public broadcaster Kan said on Friday, without citing sources.

Another Israeli reporter, Raphael Ahren of the Times of Israel, said U.S. President Donald Trump would on Friday announce that Bahrain was joining its neighbour the United Arab Emirates in formally establishing ties with Israel.

The White House had no immediate comment. Trump will on Tuesday host a White House ceremony solemnising the Israel-UAE deal, which was announced on Aug. 13.

The Kan reporter, Amichai Stein, said in a tweet that Bahrain Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa would be in Washington on Monday...

Last week Bahrain said it would allow flights between Israel and the UAE to use its airspace. This followed a Saudi decision to allow an Israeli commercial airliner to fly over it on the way to the UAE.

Bahrain, a small island state, is a close ally of Saudi Arabia and the site of the U.S. Navy’s regional headquarters. Riyadh in 2011 sent troops to Bahrain to help quell an uprising and, alongside Kuwait and the UAE, in 2018 offered Bahrain a $10 billion economic bailout.

Dims discombobulated all over.

I wish they were. To me they just seem a little too cock-sure that they'll be able to steal this thing.

President Trump announcing the historic win today:

Historic wins are a typical day at the office for this President.

Remember when making peace in the Middle East was considered as mission impossible - just a cynical punchline?

The Trump Presidency is like the labors of Hercules. One impossible accomplishment after another.

The biggest enemies of peace and personal happiness on this planet are Iran and Communist China.

It’s time for those Middle East nuts to stop being children. Does anybody remember Yassar Arafat?

How about those Palestinians? What have they done to improve their lot?

President Trump is leading....how dare he lead?

Please don’t tell anybody, but I love the guy.

What’s disgusting is how the media will ignore this, or criticize it. They will not give this man credit for anything!

“What’s disgusting is how the media will ignore this, or criticize it.”

Its a trap for them.

Let them go ahead and reflexively criticize it. It is likely going to become overwhelming in coming weeks. Their foolishness and dishonesty will only be highlighted once again.

If the Saudis sign up for it, the dam will burst (it may have already, behind the scenes in Diplomatic channels), and many countries will be willing - even eager to get on board.

“ This is not supposed to be happening. How is Trump able to bring peace to the middle east without firing a single bullet whereas other presidents have spent 10s of billions and sacrificed tens of thousands of lives and achieved nothing ??”

I was asking myself the same question. I’m no Middle East expert so take it with a grain of salt. Here’s what I came up with:

Other US Presidents tried to broker a compromise between Israel and anti-Israel factions which do not even acknowledge Israel’s right to exist. Obviously, Israel can’t accept such a compromise - so any deals made on that basis were insincere, “for show” and were doomed to failure.

I suspect President Trump was the first US President in a very long time to point out the absurdity of expecting Israel to forfeit its right to exist - and to outspokenly pledge unconditional US support for Israel’s right to exist.

Symbols of President Trump’s resolve, including moving the US embassy to Jerusalem, could not have been lost on the various parties. US rhetoric at the UN and in other international forums has sent a clear message to the world. Under President Trump, the US is no longer willing to “go along to get along.”

The specter of a US President promising US energy independence - and then achieving it - must have sent shockwaves throughout the world - especially the Middle East.

So, this series of talks may be the first truly honest attempt at brokering peace in the Middle East, absent the anti-Israel “poison pills“, absent the OPEC extortion, and absent NeoCon defense lobby conflicts of interest.

I think there have been decades of wishful thinking by of some of Israel’s ME enemies - that perhaps if they held out long enough, a sufficiently anti Israel US President would come along and help rid them of Israel once and for all. Or that a future US President would take military interventionism to the next step, creating opportunities to redraw boundaries in their favor.

I think this wishful thinking was encouraged by the Bush’s neocon schizophrenia following 9/11, and by the decidedly anti-Israel Obama administration as well.

Perhaps President Trump’s brutal honesty has brought an end to an era of wishful thinking by Israel’s enemies. Absent that wishful thinking, I imagine all parties can see the benefits of peace - especially when President Trump shows his willingness to use economic partnership with the US as leverage - both the carrot and the stick.
