The residents of a Whitefish neighborhood surrounding a pleasant lake with a racist name filed documents in Flathead County District Court earlier this month to officially rename it Lost Loon Lake.
The petition, submitted by the City of Whitefish on behalf of 12 of the 21 lakeshore property owners, is the latest development in a years-long effort to change the name of Lost Coon Lake, citing coons use as an offensive slur for African-Americans. And that name, according to court filings, was a compromise solution after an initiative began in the 1980s to rename what was then (N-Word) Lake.
Locals and visitors alike consider the name Lost Coon Lake extremely offensive, as its history and meaning are easily discovered, the city wrote in the court filing.
Court documents cite Wikipedia and the book Stump Town to Ski Town that note the lakes original name.
The 61-acre lake is adjacent to Whitefish Lake Golf Club and has no public access. The golf course has already been referring to it as Lost Loon Lake on its course map and other signage, according to the filing. WLGC also installed a nesting platform for loons, an aquatic bird found in Northwest Montana, to create a welcoming habitat. Loons had previously been using the lake as a feeding area.

So we now have red meat and ? meat. If you go to food serving facilities no more chicken breasts, no more pork, the other white meat, and no more fish. And we will die sooner.
White meat contains large amounts of protein. And the health effects that correlate with white meat consumption have been studied as compared to red meat and vegetarian diets. There is a decreased incidence of stroke. There is no association with obesity or insulin resistance. White meat appears to have a neutral or favorable effect on blood coagulation profiles.
We’re all going to die and the pigs and chickens will have to deal with the fish for control of the planet. Sounds just like Animal Farm.

I raise Treeing Walker Coon Hounds. What should I call them? The dogs ARE black & white and tan. They don't have a racist bone in their bodies. ;)
“I find the name Whitefish to be objectionable and racist.”
Same as blackball, black eye, blackout. Are they going to be changed to get rid of, bruise, and power outage? One of them slopes again. People are getting too dramatized.

lol!
“Named him Sean Coonery.”
Love it! Our raccoons are, ‘Jennifer Cooniston’ and ‘George Cooney.’ ‘Rocket’ passed away from old age last year. :(
Hmm...well this may actually be a legitimate need for a name change...if this is true...it may actually have been named this as a racial slur.
Can't assume they are all bogus.
Oh, I remember that one...LOL. They wanted to change it to “Fish Save” New York.
White fish are inherently racist. Gotta ban them altogether.
They blew it...They could have named it Lost Goon Lake and been proud of it...
The article isn’t about renaming Whitefish.
It IS about renaming the “City of Whitefish”—which is named after the fish!
Haw-haw!!!!
Nope.
“The residents of a Whitefish neighborhood surrounding a pleasant lake with a racist name filed documents in Flathead County District Court earlier this month to officially rename it Lost Loon Lake.”
I think that when someone actually translated it for them, their nutsy response was something like, ‘Whatever; it sounds violent.’
None taken, I hear you. I remember when the Stones hired the Hell’s Angels as security at the infamous Altamont concert. They, along with the Grateful Dead had a large following among the bikers. Nothing like pissing off a YYUUGGE part of your fan base because of TDS.
Spodabee named Nagger Lake.
Absolutely! To a hammer, everything looks like a nail. To a racist, every word and action reeks of racism. Even if you have to look for it with a microscope.
LOL
