Hurricane Laura emerged from the Caribbean Sea, leaving behind flooding and fatalities in Hispaniola and Cuba. Former Hurricane Marco dissipated Tuesday morning, a few hours before Laura strengthened to a hurricane.

What's up with the stranded storm chasers at Holly Beach?
Reed Timmer is there-Crazy
LIVE update from the shore of Lake Calcasieu in Lake Charles LA where a 15-20’ storm surge is anticipated with arrival of CAT4 #HurricaneLaura tonight. A tsunami like surge of water is expected to penetrate over 30 miles inland in southern LA

Lol..no problem! It’s not that the C-130’s can help in hurricanes so much, it’s that they can transport large numbers of people in an emergency/crisis (or war).
In this case, I’m guessing they felt it would be quicker to get hundreds out this way than using alternate means- they won’t further clog the roads!

power company trucks staged in Kenner LA
Thanks :)
I have a rule: dont tell other chaserdudes what to do.
(Im a bad mentor.) Gonna break the rule today: Do not play
games with #LAURA. Large, intense hurricane, at night, over
marshlands is dangerous as hell. If chasing MICHAEL gave you
confidence, lose it. This ones different.
Lake Charles has petro/chemical that going to take a beating also.
Essentially south of IH-10 from Houston east to Baton Rouge, La is
mostly flat marsh land very sparse wooded areas. Not a lot to stop
the wind, etc. Once it gets inland and North of IH-10 it will begin
to weaken much quicker.
Ouch. Stay safe
Will be following mostly offline. Thanks to all, esp. NN for these updates. Stay safe folks. Looks like a monster storm.
Sounds very wise.
It is always comforting to see the power company trucks staging before a storm, and the convoys after the storm.
looks like it has turned
may go EAST of Lake Charles
Holly Beach is 25-30 miles south of I-10, due south of Sulphur. There are only 2 roads in or out. By now, both are underwater. Anyone who didnt leave Holly Beach is trapped and very unlikely to survive. There is not a single building or structure in that area that will survive the storm surge they will see. Nothing.
East of Lake Charles would be a blessing for storm surge.
Location...About 130 MI S of Lake Charles LA
...About 130 MI SSE of Port Arthur TX
Max Sustained Winds...145 MPH
Moving...NW at 15 MPH
Minimum Pressure...947 MB
Thanks for compiling the links
Glad to assist.
eye looks smaller...I think winds have increased...Recon in there now
Katrina was a minor hurricane - the flooding occurred because the levees failed. The 40 miles inland has to be because of the rivers - a wall of water isn’t going to go 40 miles inland - it’s impossible. So, I’m assuming, the NHC is referring to the storm surge traveling up rivers and inundating the river shorelines.
