Hurricane Laura emerged from the Caribbean Sea, leaving behind flooding and fatalities in Hispaniola and Cuba. Former Hurricane Marco dissipated Tuesday morning, a few hours before Laura strengthened to a hurricane.

I have friends who only left today. They have reported that the roads out were NOT jammed... Most people left yesterday. I think, people who CAN leave, can STILL get to safety.
They should. Only a few more hours left to be able.
HUGE military cargo and/or personnel plane. My son went to Iraq in one- they all did. Not designed for comfort.
This certainly look possible. Most people don't appreciate just how LUCKY Houston got with Ike. A last minute, 30 mile jog to the east saved Houston from a much worse surge event.. and that was at low tide. Naples was lucky a few years ago to have a weakening storm come ashore during LOW tide.
This will be the first time this part of the coast has seen a rising tide, increasing strength Cat 4/5 storm in nearly 50 years. My heart aches as I watch these reports from my former home.
God will convince all reasonable people by this time tomorrow. :-(
Lake Charles is only 15 feet above sea level.
They are coming in from PA.Working the storm.
Im wondering how this helps in a hurricane . Although please accept thanks for the explanations as only FreeReublic can do.

Last-minute evacuations. C-130s are designed for difficult takeoffs and landings.
Oh please God, YES! East of Lake Charles is 100% the least damaging place this storm could go.
Yep...no south wind to send the most Surge up Calcasieu Lake
Just looking at a satellite view of the Beaumont and Port Arthur area. Lots of industry down there. Oil and chemicals. That might make for an even tougher cleanup if those facilities get hammered.
