Kamala Harris' Father, a Footnote in Her Speeches, Is a Prominent Economist
The New York Times, via Yahoo! ^ | August 23, 2020 | Barry

In a warm, encyclopedic tribute to her family Wednesday night, as she formally accepted the vice-presidential nomination, Sen. Kamala Harris skimmed past any discussion of her father, Donald Harris, a Jamaican-born professor of economics at Stanford University.

The reason is common to many of Harris’ generation: She is a child of divorce, raised by a single mother who became her most profound influence.

As Harris has stepped into the national spotlight, Donald Harris, now 81 and long retired from teaching, has remained mostly silent. His only recent comments about her, published on a Jamaican website run by an acquaintance, express a combination of pride in his daughter and bitterness over their estrangement.

He scolded her in a letter, which has since been removed from the site, for joking in an interview that, growing up in a Jamaican family, it was natural that she had smoked marijuana. “Speaking for myself and my immediate Jamaican family, we wish to categorically dissociate ourselves from this travesty,” he wrote.

Huh? seems to me that I've seen lots of criticism about her from her father.

Interesting intelligence.

Seems like there’s a lot we still don’t know about about the Kamel Harasser. She’s gift that keeps on giving for Republicans.

Thanks, I did check it out. I found his book online in PDF form and scanned through it.

The 300-page book compares Classical Economists (Adam Smith and others) with Karl Marx’s theories. Marx got to billing in the book. His name was used 450 times. It certainly seems like he admired Marx’s theories as progress.

However, it appears he studied Marx theories from a highly theoretical viewpoint. There’s nothing in the work to suggest he wanted to change society or that he viewed capitalism as an exploitive system.

The book has zero practical examples in it — and thus it is a boring block of text with lots of $10 words, few active verbs, and mathematical formulas galore. For a layman, it has nothing to offer.

He finished the book in 1977 and it was published by Stanford Press the next year, at a time when Silicon Valley was ramping up and would soon become the icon of capitalism’s success.

Harris was the first black person to earn tenure at Stanford. An achievement, yes, but it seems Harris was totally outside the main stream of revolutionary economic and entrepreneurial thought that hatched at Stanford in the 1970s.

I’m conjecturing here, but it must have been a tough time in his life because his wife and he were separated. She and their two daughters (Kamela and Maya) were living in Montreal as his wife was working at McGill University. In fact he dedicated the book to his daughters who were still children at the time.

Meanwhile he’s back at Stanford writing this ponderous book that has little practicality to the world around him.

So yes, on the surface he is a Marxist, but with a very small “m”. I suspect the Communist influence of Kamela Harris did not come from his father, but from the mother’s side and influence of Berkeley California’s Leftist culture.

To me, the only qualification to be a marxist is whether you ascribe to the labor theory of value.

If you ascribe to that, whether you call yourself communist, socialist, or fascist, you are a Marxist.

The ONLY alternative is the market theory of value.

During an appearance on the radio show “The Breakfast Club” in February, Kamala Harris joked with host Charlamagne tha God.

When asked whether she supported or opposed the legalization of the drug.

Kamala replied saying, “Half my family is from Jamaica. Are you kidding me?”

Kamala’s father was far from amused.

In a statement to Jamaica Global Online, Donald Harris, an Award-Winning Stanford Professor,
an economist who immigrated to the U.S. from Jamaica for his Ph.D, wrote:

“My dear departed must be turning in their grave right now to see their family’s name, reputation and proud Jamaican identity being connected, in any way, jokingly or not, with the fraudulent stereotype of a pot-smoking joy seeker in the pursuit of identity politics.

Thanks Poco - I can’t recall where I read about Harris being a Marxist professor, but it pushed Marxism in a tougher way. I appreciate you looking into it as you did

Yes, Larry, I attended your free online primer course on Communism and Socialism, so I pinged you knowing you'd be interested.

You are correct. In his exhaustive 300 page book he doesn't discuss market value at all. Kamela's professor Dad is still stuck on measuring the labor pool -- as if all forms of labor are of equal value.

I'm definitely going to attend your next briefing. Checking your twitter page daily so I'll get the alerts ahead of time.

Yes, Donald Harris seems like a very dignified guy. And he’s being honest — a terrific blow to Kamela’s credibility.

This is where Obama was very smart. He silenced every family relative, college friend, etc. You got to give the con artist some credit. It maintained airtight security on his past.

Kamela is not nearly as clever. But she thinks she is!
