Phoenix police released body cam footage August 13 showing Ryan Whitakers shooting and the aftermath. The incident started over a noise complaint from Ryans neighbor upstairs who called police twice. Ryan opened the door holding his gun when confronting the two police officers.
It turned out they were just playing videos games and yelling, and Ryan had the gun because there had recently been some strange knocking at his door.

Ryan Whitaker is man on left..............
A door is a funny thing. It’s like the lid on a surprise package. Police have 1/10th of a second to process and act.
A victim of circumstance.
Wow, WTF? I support the blue but this seems like a horrible travesty of justice. I did not hear them identify themselves as the police when they were pounding on the door. Yeah, answering the door with a gun in your hand is not a good idea but getting blasted for it?
It’s all blurred out. Who knows what happened.
Well I heard them very clearly shout after knocking that they were the police.
Come on.....a guy answers the door with a gun in his hand? And the police should do nothing?
Are you a Democrat?
The cop who shot him should be tried for murder and hung from a light pole in the town square. Do a raffle and let the winner pull the lever to hang the sociopathic demon who did this. Despicable beyond belief. See how he lied to the woman and claimed he “moved towards me” when the victim actually GOT DOWN ON THE GROUND before being executed.
Note to self - Don’t answer the door holding a gun!
Ha. Good one. I didn’t hear them identify themselves - that’s my fault.
“Yeah, answering the door with a gun in your hand is not a good idea”
I always do, but that’s what peep holes are for as well.
Also, people are not obligated to answer their doors if they don’t want to.
Apartment living is serious drama however. Everybody complains about everybody.
That whole situation was messed up from one end to the other. I wouldn’t want to be on the jury for that one, I see both sides of it. The flashlight in the eyes is what would have probably put me over the top against the cops though.
There are things in life that seem really dangerous, but really are not, and there are other things that don’t seem dangerous, but really are.
Whenever you come into contact with police and you have a gun in your hand, there is a serious risk that your soul will be leaving your body that day. They identified themselves. Their fear for their own lives kicked in and his reflexive move cost him.
Never brandish a gun unless you are fully prepared to discharging it. Never discharge a gun unless you are shooting to kill.
There is no way in hell I’d open the door to people who claimed to be cops - while I have a gun in my hand.
And yet so many FReepers declare theyll handle their gun any way they wish and anywhere.
Id say it depends on how he handled it.
We shouldnt be surprised someone wants to protect himself and be ready.
But was he blatantly pointing it outside as he opened? Did he hold a little until cops decided to shoot...which might indicate he WASN’T just going to automatically fire?
I watched the video again, it looked like to me that the guy dropped to his knees and raised his arms. At best this looked like a horrible overreaction by the LEOs.
Please make no mistake....it’s very possible the guy answering the door didn’t hear them identify themselves as police.
It happened very fast. I did NOT see a gun in the guy’s hand but there was a gun laying on the floor and the cop warned the girl to get away from the gun.
I just don’t think answering the door with a gun in your hand is a good idea. He could have put a gun somewhere nearby if he was scared for his life but whatever.....what a dumb thing to do.
I just think that a cop should not respond to a guy answering a door holding a gun.
But if I had all the answers they’d call me Obama.
It was a good shoot. Sorry, but police dont need to exercise fatal restraint in acting on a perceived threat.
I always answer the door with a gun on me.
But, I have a video system. That determines whether or not my gun is in my hand when I answer.
Just going by the video, I would hang the cops for this.
They were responding to a ‘noise complaint’. Drawing guns is SOP for noise?.................
I’ve only lived in an apartment once in my life. It was for 11 months after my wife kicked me out after 20 years of marriage and without cause back in 1997. I’ll never live in one again. Rental houses can be fine, but apartments - no way. I’d live in a trailer before I’d share a wall with someone else. Ain’t happening.
It was a noise complaint. Does SOP require them to have guns drawn, cocked and aimed?................
