The United Arab Emirates has become the first country among oil-producing Arab Gulf states to open a nuclear power plant.
The UAE's state news agency reported on Saturday that the first unit at the Barakah nuclear power plant in Abu Dhabi had started operations.
A South Korean-led consortium won the bid to build the plant in 2009, after competing with rivals from Japan and the United States. The plant will consist of four nuclear reactors.
Thermal power generation using natural gas has been a main energy source in the UAE. This is the first time an Arab Gulf nation that has relied on fossil fuels for energy production has put a nuclear power plant into operation.
It is believed the UAE aims to reduce dependence on natural gas as an energy source, and cut carbon dioxide emissions to demonstrate its efforts to be eco-friendly.

UAE has no oil
The Bhopal disaster wasn’t the fault of the chemical company. They had all of the equipment, processes and procedures in place to prevent it. The culture of the people operating the plant was the fault. They were not a culture prepared to operate complex, dangerous machinery. They simply were not concerned with safety.
I know nothing about the UAE, but have known a lot of Arabs from other countries. It is not an overstatement that they believe the world works by magic; not logic or science.
I can only hope they have hired Western operators.

In 2016 the UAE only produced 3,772,788 barrels per day.
The UAE doesn’t actually have all that much oil, and they are well advised to not use any they have to generate power - much better for them to sell all of it to other people.
He was off about ‘no oil’ but relatively speaking for a Gulf country they don’t have enough to be throwing it away on domestic power production. They may say this (and their solar power ventures) are for “green” reasons, but they’re really just making sure they have power if the oil runs out and so they can sell more oil to the rest of the world (which makes more sense financially).

Boiling water nuclear reactors. The most insane folly of man ever. Even more insane than the Atom bomb. In the event of a real disaster then everyone of these reactors is a ticking dirty bomb set to go off within a few days. You can’t just switch them off and walk away.
This plant just became Iran’s number one target.

Looks like they are APR1400 reactors, which are pressurized water type.
The French have used GE boiling water reactors for years, and I don’t recall them having anything catastrophic happen.

That would be the *AIR-COOLED* nuclear reactors the British thought were a good idea. There literally is no way to prevent a nuclear accident with that design.
Iran and Saudi Arabia don’t have nuclear plants?
Think they’re talking about the Arabian Peninsula as the “Arab World” so that counts out Iran, and the Saudis don’t currently have any, but several are under construction. The Saudis want them for general electricity production and more specifically to power their growing desalination plants.
Lots and lots of sunshine...close to the equator...sparsely populated.
