The New York State Supreme Court last week granted a motion ordering the New York City Police Department (NYPD) to turn over the name, zip codes and license category of anyone who was granted a firearm license in 2018.
The New York Daily News made the request under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request process, which provides public information from government agencies to citizens and journalists.
...
The Daily News argues that the information can be turned over because of a state law known as the SAFE Act that declared "that names and addresses of all firearms licenses were public information."
...
The NYPD denied the request on multiple occasions, citing various reasons, like an "invasion of privacy" and "extraordinary effort" would have to be put forth to collect the records.
....
The court concluded that the department violated the FOIL.
...
There is absolutely no reason for the Daily News to have the names of gun owners and what type of firearm they possess. There is no good that can come out of that. What purpose does it serve other than to doxx or shame those who choose to protect themselves with a gun?
This case right here is what gun owners have been worried about: the ability to create a registry, which could eventually lead to confiscation.

Ive often figured that day would come. Fundamental transformation
This is the problem with being reduced to asking permission to arm yourself.
By this argument, everyone is entitled to ALL the information on who in the New York State is there illegally.
Correct.
Incremental, with little to no pushback.
They need to fix ALL NYSTATE government employees
UN Agenda 21 ( Let me know if you wish to be added or removed from the list.)
They are coming for your guns. Some people are just foolish enough to believe them when they they are not.
NY media did this before, they doxxed almost everyone who had a CCW permit in NYC.
Can’t wait to see the lawsuits this time when they yet again expose people with protective orders and abusive spouses/significant others, who were trying to hide from their domestic abusers.
Either we kill them or they kill us. The sooner everyone understands this the better
What are the names and addresses of all those NYSSC justices?
Isn’t that public information?
I think when papers do this EVERY PERSON on that paper gets their name and address tossed on the internet... They want to force people to stop owning guns..How about we scare the crap out of people who want to work for a paper that has all the employees names and addresses out there....
I don’t know what the details are in New York, but California has a similar policy in place decided decades ago by the state supreme court. Because California is a “discretionary issue” state where the County Sheriffs and/or City Police issue carry permits based on their own individual discretion (the permit is good state wide, but issued by your local LEO) the court recognized there was widespread opportunity for abuse such as giving permits to political donors, friends, trading them for favors, denying them to minorities etc that it was in the public interest to know which agencies issues how many permits and to whom. So anyone can actually file an FOIA request on the carry permits. Some of the personal info is redacted (but recently some outfit obtained the records of tens or hundreds of thousands of people). The rural county sheriffs are almost all shall issue but the big city/county require an extraordinary showing of “good cause” e.g. you are a witness against the mafia etc.
To purchase a weapon you need to demonstrate you can safely handle a weapon. But you can get that test and permit at any gun store and once you have it you can keep using it. You need the carry permit if you want it on your person or in your vehicle. Otherwise to transport it must be unloaded and locked in a separate case, not the glove box, and separate from the ammunition.
I think the NYPD should burn the records.
Accidents happen when youre not funded properly.
Exactly what I was thinking.
Or wiped, like with a cloth.
The judge thinks the Daily News should have this information? Those people won’t be safe, either criminals burglarizing their home to steal the guns or crazy gun grabbing liberal mobs going after them.
