Goodbye, Washington DC. (must read)
Human Events ^ | 07-13-2020 | Daniel Turner

Mayor Bowser broke her contract with residents like me. So we’re leaving.

During the last night in my condo in DC, I had to walk my dog an extra lap around the block because a crazy person was outside screaming obscenities. I wasn’t afraid. I just didn’t feel like getting into it with him or having to listen to his story—his “Let me just tell you something,” attempt to get money from me. It was 1 A.M., and I was tired from a night out—but more so, just tired in general. Tired of it all.

...I did my part, too. My role in the fabric of urban society, overlooked but essential, was to spend my money. Eat, drink, shop, spend, tip, pay. And man, did I pay: taxes, rents, then a mortgage and HOA fees. I paid taxes on things the government deemed “bad” for me, like alcohol and cigarettes; taxes on services which organized labor deemed “bad” for them, like rideshare. I paid gas tax, cable tax, cell phone tax, and, of course, income tax. Lots of income tax.

All I asked in return was relative safety and to be left alone to enjoy the city. City-living in America, for decades, meant tolerating mild inconveniences so that you could be left alone, alongside millions of others. That was the tacit pact.

And DC broke it.

This is one of the better pieces I've run across in a while. I recommend reading the whole thing.

What a let down. I read the headline and thought that fault line in the Canary Islands finally gave way and that 300 foot Tsunami I’ve been praying for finally flushed the toilet for us...

All US cities are dens of palpable hate. Especially towards the white race.

I went to Jerusalem during some real Palestinian unrest and I never felt the same level of hate, fear and loathing that permeates the air in DC.

I had some aunts and uncles that retired from the military and settled down in Alexandria, VA. Back when I was a kid in the early 70s, it was always a big treat to go see them on vacation and go into DC to see the museums, monuments and other sites. When I went to Gettysburg College in the late 80's, it was nice to drive down on the weekends, take a date to the Smithsonian and dinner at any number of restaurants in Old Town Alexandria.

Last time I was in the area for any amount of time was around 20 years ago when I left the Army and out-processed from Ft. Meade.

Sad that it has become what it is today.

The sad thing is, there are many like this person. And of the many, there are MANY Liberals who have the means to move. And when they do, they just ruin the next place.

Austin ... Atlanta ... Boise ... Bozeman ... Kalispel ... Charlotte ... Greenville ... Nashville ... Chattanooga ... Dallas ... Denver ... to name a few.

Buy rural. It’s the new paradigm.

Even medium size cities are now run by morons, who have no concept of balancing finances, or halting crime.

It’s only going to get worse, as “ major league “ cities continue to raise taxes in a futile effort to survive.

None of the leavers say “Now I’m voting Trump/GOP.” the unspoken part is that they think Trump is worse.

And still, people here clap for the leavers and hallucinate that they’re conservatives now.

Well, Turner, if you are leaving DC please don’t come to Utah. We already have enough a-holes like you who come here for the low crime and decent housing costs and then elect the same scum who ruined New York and DC. Stay away.

I notice he didn’t mention the 800lb Donkey in the room. Democrats are the root of urban evil.

Next up, a Biden presidency that will centralize all zoning and follow you to the suburbs and the rural areas and wreck those areas.

Very good article. What little respect I had for Bowser (I knew I disagreed with her on almost everything, but thought she at least had a brain) was destroyed the first week of June.

DC sucks. It’s 3rd world s-hole with few gentrified areas. I would not go in there unarmed.

Yep, that was a good read. Basically a city guy voicing a libertarian plea. When you love a city you agree to its communitarian tradeoffs. But in this case they’ve pushed him too far, and presumably there are many others like him.

"A man can only tolerate a homeless guy defecating outside his window for so long. The shuttered restaurants, the burnt out stores, the mask-shaming and sloganeering calls for 'diversity' or 'justice' are all just exhausting, not to mention intellectually vapid and morally bankrupt. I’m going a step further: not only will I not be conscripted into your cause, but I will no longer even financially support it with the one thing I control—my wallet."

The whole piece was brilliant. Thanks for posting.

I moved out of expensive, retarded, mask-shaming, uber-liberal Dane County six years ago for the same reasons this guy states. Granted, I had a small farmette there, but for ONE acre, the taxes were $3,800.00. I had no fire service, no water service and if I had a problem the police were 10 miles away in any direction. *Rolleyes*

I now have 160 acres, ONE county over. Taxes are still $3,800.00. People are nice here, and I don't have any SJWs in my face. ;)

That’s it. The two sides are at a point where there’s no agreement. There is no ‘reaching across the aisle’. There is no more compromise. These riots are proving that.

There is only one Republican willing to sell out their voters and take away more “rights” or enact more prohibitions to our daily lives and well being.

My nephew posted something to his Instagram....tweet from the President about all the chaos, violence and destruction going on in Seattle....someone responded to the effect, “ I just walked thru Seattle and saw none of that. Chill dawg”. Guess the respondent didn’t see the story about SPD getting IEDs and explosives being thrown at them. Guess the respondent didn’t walk through the areas that have been under siege from all the anarchists.

I think you’re probably wrong about the author of this article - and I don’t think he’s alone.
