(CNN)A new national survey spells more bad news for the restaurant industry.

Sixty percent of restaurants that shut down during the pandemic are now closed for good, says the report from Yelp, the online service that provides crowd-sourced reviews. "The restaurant industry now reflects the highest total business closures, recently surpassing retail," Yelp says.

I’ve said this repeatedly. We are in the eye of the storm, and the other side is economic.

I see the whole nation as the town of Radiator Springs (the movie, “Cars”) when the interstate arrived. The weak businesses failed immediately, and as time passed, more and more “solid” businesses failed until it was a shell of its former self and the current residents are basically just surviving.

This is literally where the whole world is headed with this. Just wait until the government stops printing money and handing it out for free. That is when the real SHTF moment happens. It will be after the election, of course.

I don’t think people realize where we are headed with this and it is not speculation. It’s not “if”, it is “when and how bad”. It will be very bad and “when is not decades off. It is less than five years. probably less than two.

You think 2020 was “interesting”? Just wait until 2021. It’ll blow your mind. I’m not kidding.

I’ll have to dig it up, but I saw a Twitter that said this will be the biggest transfer from small companies to big multi-nationals in history.

*spit*

The on3s in cities run by leftists probably have been hit the hardest, my bet.

And our Dallas county judge Howdy Dooty Clay Jenkins helped make it happen.

Not much of a shock.

But with any forest fire, new growth will sprout from the ashes.

Not like the appetite that made those places exist in the first place just vanished.

The restaurant model will have to adapt. More takeout and delivery less indoor dining.

In my area many restaurants stayed open with curbside pickup. They are mostly all still open. I don’t know how long they can stay so with months of dramatically reduced income but they have mostly stayed open around here. Now those that can are putting picnic tables in their parking lots so they can have people actually sit and drink / eat like normal. A few, like buffets, I think are mostly screwed though. They had no way to effectively remain open.

Anyway when they say ‘60% of restaurants that closed’ that is not the same as 60% of all restaurants.

....

Thank Trump! He’s the one who praised Fauci and Birx to the hilt at each and every stupid covid briefing! He gave these two idiots credibility, and provided cover to these rogue Dem Govs and Mayors who are destroying their states economies!

Thank you President Trump!

Not surprising. Restaurants operate on a razor thin margin and whim I took marketing decades ago had the highest first year failure rate of any business enterprise.

I know a few restauranteurs. Its a TOUGH business. Requires constant attention to details, bad employees will rob you blind or destroy your reputation, and customers are fickle. None operate with huge margins, or big cash reserves.

Its the ultimate free-market, entrepreneurial business.

60% permanent closure is a reasonable figure.

Not surprising. Many are close to the edge on a good day.

Do you know how to make a small fortune?
Start with a big one and open a restaurant.

The gal who used to do my wife’s hair before Gruesome, had a son who was a waiter at a good restaurant in our area.

When they first closed, the owner kept most of his staff via carryout business.

This last closure was more than he and his wife could handle. They closed their doors and gave their food to charity. About 20 people became unemployed including this lady’s son.

Her beauty shop is still closed after the second closing.
