History is pounding at agricultures door. One of the greatest farming enigmas to afflict growers in the last 100 years has been solved, yet the answer sits idle. At its core, the cotton riddle is simple: How to remove a naturally occurring pest deterrent from seeds, yet preserve the toxin within plants? The long-sought solution means cotton can make a massive leap from fabric to consumptionand provide 10.8 trillion grams of precious protein for the animal feed industry and human intake. Bottom line: After 7,000 years of cultivation, cotton is at the cusp of helping feed the planet.
Cotton has slipped the ball-and-chain of gossypol, a bitter-tasting toxin that ensures the vast majority of cottonseed is only suitable for cattle consumption. Gossypol has long been in the crosshairs of a cotton industry anxious for new markets, but removal exclusively from seed has proved impossible or impracticaluntil now. A breakthrough advance, painstakingly achieved by a stellar Texas A&M University research team, and supported by the confidence of Cotton Incorporated, has led to cottonseed devoid of gossypol, and tagged with the imprimatur of FDA and USDA.

Paging Milo Minderbender.
Well written article covering the quest to provide protein for the world’s hungry.
The story has a Texas A&M link.
It all makes sense now. BLM and the other Marxist libtards are going to round up all the white people and put them out in cotton fields. KUNTA KEN.
I’m triggered! Cotton, slavery!! No god! Must eliminate this!
Milo is out making roti bread.
Oops! ‘god’s.b’good’.
This may be the most interesting article I have read in United States news in the last 10 years. It is right up there with the Trump win in 2016.
Why?!
Is this another case of a “solution” in search of a problem?
I’m still not getting a picture of how this would work as a food product. Do they mean a food product for Livestock to consume?
Wait, I thought edible underwear was already a thing. LOL!
Its the best catch there is.
bravo for the catch 22 reference!
100%
Cotton seed hulls already are meant for livestock, that is those that are ruminants. Because of the gossypol content in cotton seeds, is not fit for consumption by non-ruminant animals, i.e. chickens, fish and others.
That’s a no go. Cotton is part of the slave South.
Anything that has to be highly processed before consumption was never meant to be used as food. I’ll pass.
LOL...I was thinking we are going to get all the inner city ghetto dwellers employed in the fields again, but your concept is even better!
But whos going to pick it?
