China Has ‘First-Strike’ Capability To Melt U.S. Power Grid With Electromagnetic Pulse Weapon
Forbes ^ | 6/25/20 | James Conca

Last week, the EMP Task Force on National and Homeland Security issued a scary report on China’s ability to conduct an Electromagnetic Pulse attack on the United States. The key takeaway, according to Dr. Peter Pry,
executive director of the task force, is that China now has super-EMP weapons, knows how to protect itself against an EMP attack, and has developed protocols to conduct a first-strike attack, even as they deny they would ever do so.

According to the Center for Strategic International Studies, China has the most active ballistic missile development program in the world, so this is doubly troubling. China used stolen U.S. technology to develop at least three types of high-tech weapons to attack the electric grid and key technologies that could cause a surprise “Pearl Harbor” attack that could produce a deadly blackout to the entire country.

Dr. Pry outlines how China has built a network of satellites, high-speed missiles, and super-electromagnetic pulse weapons that could melt down our electric grid, fry critical communications, and even takeout the ability of our aircraft carrier groups to respond.

Forstchen’s “Days of Wrath” about islamo-terrorists is just as scary. Combines Beslan, ISIS, and the DC sniper.

Bill Clinton also gave them the gift keeps on giving when he “leveled the playing field” and gave them the missile telemetry data they needed.

I sat in a fascinating briefing about two years ago given by an actual nuclear scientist who was one of the team members who built the first EMP weapon.

In A VIEW TO A KILL, Max Zorin (Christopher Walken) makes microchips which are impervious to EMP weapon...Then he sends them to Soviet Union...

In GOLDENEYE, the villains steal the Russian EMP weapon...It is called “Goldeneye”...It is in space...

Those are two movie which dealt with EMP...I don’t know if there are other movies...

Lightning is fairly concentrated in it’s area of strike but power systems don’t get knocked out over a neighbor hood when a bolt strikes near by. An emp effects thousands of square miles, at least in the scenarios people talk about so lines buried at least 5 or 6 feet into the ground should have some protection. After all most modern houses have a grounding rod some place or should have, that is pounded three or more feet into the earth for the grounding of their electrical systems. There would be scattered widespread damage but many systems would still be operational during an emp. A tall tv or cell tower might act as a local concentrator of emp particles providing a path for grounding(like a lightning rod) and spare a good chunk of the community around them.

The curvature of the earth also dimnishes effects on the periphery and also the sun on the day side of the earth drives and thins the magnetic field back on the day side to the nightside.(it would take multiple emp’s in a an equdistant spacing with each other at points much lower in the atmosphere for a day shot to work)

It would have to be an attack on the nightside in order to get the best bang out of the Earth’s magnetic field in terms of wide area coverage but that is problematic. An attacking country has no way to calibrate to ensure that only the country it is attacking is the only one that will get affected. The US has assets all over the world and can respond with them...so do our allies. China and or Russia may want friendly relations with countries like Mexico and Canada or nations in SAmerica but if the emp that cripples us also knocks some of these other nations, then China may be dealing with more pissed off nations than they bargained for. No one has ever tried a deliberate strategic(I know we’ve used small scale tacticle emps in certain cities over certain installations with variable affectiveness) emp to take out a nation so no one knows how to calibrate the yileds and the positioning. Altitude and the magnetic flux strength of the Earth’s magnetic fields in the area of the emp would be hard to calculate to get the effects desired and the field itselfe flickers and is never quite uniform in any given area. Hit the emp point at the wrong time and altitude and perhaps nothing but a few cell towers get’s knocked out and little else.

Mountain ranges and river valleys and the fact the the earth’s surface is not uniform over land will either concentrate emp particles in some areas or mitigate them to a nothing ness in others. Buried features and mineral and metal concentrations of the soils and mountains will also diminsh emp affectiveness.

In short...widespread scattered head-aches but not a complete knock-out. Many cars may in fact may act as faraday cages and quite a few will have their electrical systems remain unaffected.Car Batteries may be only 12 volts but their currents run in the hundreds of amps so I suspect they’ll act in some cases as emp particle repellants.

Still the damage may be very bad in a lot of places. The Chinese may regret to find that they have filled us with a terrible resolve......

Without cell phones, computers, the youths will demand we give into China—
____________________________________________________

Without comms, they will be screaming at the sky for real.

Demand all they want, the lines will be down. They won’t even know what the weather is 50 miles away and for some, it won’t even occur to them to go outside and assess for themselves.

Our enemies _need_ the internet and phones. It is their command and control of the hordes.

The average person today cannot go 10 minutes without using their phone for something. As someone who has managed so far w/o a cell phone (hubby has one & I have a landline), I still use the internet every time I have a question, need something I can’t get locally,or want a weather forecast more than 24 hours out.

I even experience anxiety during a power outage I know will be resolved within hours. It’s totally psychological and I know it, but it’s still there.

The _world_ will be in chaos if the grid ever goes all the way down. China can’t afford to piss off everyone at once.

If we were attacked I don’t think the president would need to wait for a declaration of war. He is automatically authorized to respond in defense.

the shed needs a metal floor connected to the walls and ceilings to make a good faraday cage.

The metal could be under a plywood floor, as long as all 6 sides are connected to each other

Thanks for the tips. My metal shed has strips of corrugated metal with plywood on top for a floor. The walls, doors and roof are all metal, that goes to ground. I guess I could put a layer of mesh wire on the interior floor, walls and ceiling for extra cage interception (with a grounding rod in the dirt). Thanks again for the idea.

Our leaders have known about this for years and have done exactly nothing about it.

Problems are only dealt with AFTER they come to fruition... NOT before!

no that wont be necessary- the metal under the plywood floor is all you need and ‘extra layer’ is not needed

Charged ions then...as for the posting it is opinion based on information I’ve read over the years. The big exo-atmospheric sub orbital shots that affected electrical circuits in Hawaii were done at night at a time when transistorised electronics weren’t as wide spread. Nevertheless, Hawaii’s grid wasn’t completely knocked out. The magnetic field resembles a tear drop as the sun’s solar wind thins it on the day side but it it thicker on the night side which is why am radio signals are carried sometimes for hundreds of miles beyond their towers at night. So orbital night shots of emp weapons completely saturate the thickened magnetic fields with charged ions which reach the surface of the earth causing wide spread issues. A shot at the same distance on the day side wouldn’t be as efficient in terms of magnetic field flux capacity and potentially much less damage.

The doom and gloomers predict that it will be one shot and boom back to the stone age....that was the point of my posting...an OPINION POSTING!! I think they are wrong!!(worth no more than the buck 50 it takes to get coffee at Mcdonalds)

If you would like to educate me and others as to how my opinions are inaccurate....why don’t you do so?

I’m game!

I think you mean the IONOSPHERE

And EMP is a ‘pulse’ - a giant spike in the strength of the electro-magnetic field. There are no ‘particles’ or ‘charged ions’ involved.

In the same way a magnetic field attracts a piece of iron- there are no ‘particles’ or ‘ions’ involved.

You can use a real magnet or an electro-magnet created by a coil of wire - the magnetic field is identical.

If you suddenly increased the current n the electro magnet you have a spike in the magnetic field. A magnetic field passing through any wire (or electronic circuitry) generates current. The strength of that current from a large pulse can fry the electronics, and then you let the smoke out.

I rather doubt this. It would take a major number of weapons to pull this off
