Trump may intervene in case of St. Louis couple wielding guns at protesters, Missouri governor said

The governor of Missouri says President Trump has promised to "do everything he could within his powers" to shield a St. Louis couple who wielded guns at protesters in their gated community from prosecution, even as an attorney for the client says charges are imminent.

Gov. Mike Parson said he spoke to Trump Tuesday and was reassured that the president-- who previously has retweeted a photo of the couple, Mark and Patricia McCloskey holding up guns in front of their house in the June 28 incident--"understands the situation in Missouri."

"He understands the situation in St. Louis and how out of control it is for a prosecutor to let violent criminals off and not do their job and try to attack law-abiding citizens," Parson said at a press conference.

The DOJ can pursue a Federal case against a persecutor who violates the constitutional rights of a U.S. citizen.

Yep the FBI Civil Rights Division has authority in such cases.

Probably not, but what does that have to do with Trump claiming he will intervene is something he has no authority over?

The President has the authority to intervene, he is charged with protecting the civil rights of all citizens. The FBI/DOJ and the courts established long ago that the fed gov can step in when state or local governments trample citizens civil rights.

Why such reticence?

Colorable claims of violations by local, county or state governmental actors of federal civil rights statutes could and should spark at least an investigation by federal government law enforcement officers, if not also federal prosecutors. If warranted, prosecutors can invoke the jurisdiction of federal courts under civil or criminal federal civil rights statutes and/or empanel a federal grand jury.

The tenth amendment doesn’t block the feds from stepping in to protect citizens from local, county or state actors who offer the pretense that they are only doing their government jobs, when in reality they are viciously descending upon ordinary people who are only trying to live their lives, and oppressing them with threats of criminal prosecution in order to intimidate them, as well as any other people who are similarly situated, or may be of like mind, out of exercising their essential Constitutional rights.

It would be a bullshit intervention.

I wish the blind loyalty to Trump was just a little less blind. Every time he says stuff like, “do this...or else” he sounds like an idiot.

Instead of making empty threats, just do what you are going to do. I am sick of his “bluster” and would like to see a little more action.

I am still waiting for an Antifa Terrorism prosecution. Antifa has never been designated anything...

“The DOJ can pursue a Federal case against a persecutor who violates the constitutional rights of a U.S. citizen.”

What the McCloskey’s should do if they haven’t already is file a complaint with the U.S. attorney’s office. They already had their weapons stolen so there’s one violation of rights to start with.

The President has the authority to intervene, he is charged with protecting the civil rights of all citizens.

If they are charged then they'll be charged with state crimes. Trump has no authority to intervene in those.

It seems that when the FEDERAL Constitution is violated, it’s a matter to be handled by the Feds.

You must have missed the part where Trump said “he would do everything he can within his powers”.

Not considering this before you post makes you look stupid and overly snarky.

But you seem to think you are always right and seem to enjoy always pretending to be above others.

I don’t think there should be a pardon, as it has a connotation of guilt associated with it.

The focus should be on the prosecutor, in any and all ways to beat her into submission to follow the laws she swore to uphold.

Including disbarment and imprisonment if needed.

As chief executive of the US, Trump has both the right & responsibility to direct the Justice Dept., a part of the executive branch, to investigate violations of civil rights.

That’s not stupid, that’s being responsive to the rights of the people, an attitude sorely lacking in Washington.

Bert, you’re right, Fox News is mostly sanctimonious drivel. You summarized in two words what I said. Well done!

Here we go. Leaving out the part where these thugs broke down a gate and were trespassing. Fox is bad as the rest.

Bingo!

That seems pretty obvious since he went running to Trump rather than do anything himself. The GOP has to be replaced with a tougher party that doesn't mind turning DC upside down.

The couple's only means of protection was taken from them, armed black thugs appeared inside their gated community nearby the couple’s home (knowing now the couple is unarmed); you think President Trump is “interfering” in the Mo. Gov.’s preview.

Should a Trump just wait until the couple attempts to call 911 go unanswered, after being shot, maybe fatally?

Have you ever faced down armed thugs, trapped with nothing but their bare hands to defend yourself.....and 911 doesn’t answer?

Mo. Gov. taking a “wait and see” attitude or “let’s not rush to judgement here,” isn’t the answer.

Too bad this couple’s neighbors must be liberals who hate guns and hope their “Black Lives Matter here” signs on their lawns don’t seem to work for this couple. They must surely be hoping and praying they are shot last!
