The WHO was talking about the case fatality rate - the rate for reported cases.

The infection fatality rate is probably 10 times smaller but we can only estimate it since we'll never know total infections.

To be fair, the number was higher than it is now. Obviously the number of cases (the denominator) has gone way up. But the doctors have far better procedures to keep people alive. They rarely use ventilators any more. They do breathing exercises and give oxygen. They move people from side to side and keep them off their back. They have several drugs that lower the impact of the disease. So now, in the past 2 months, the virus is killing maybe 0.1% of people who are infected. That is less than the flu. Which you can’t say, even though its true.

I’d like to see some statistical wizard (calling John Lott) estimate how many would have died if infected people had not been sent to nursing homes.

The 2017/18 flu season was especially bad, leading to 80,000 deaths. COVID-19 numbers are approaching 120,000 deaths. Take away those deaths due to the policy of some states to send infections people to nursing homes.

As I understand it, CDC guidelines are that if the coronavirus is present at time of death, the death is to be categorized as a coronavirus death. The autopsy of George Floyd showed he had the coronavirus. So, per CDC guidelines, his was a coronavirus death. The CDC guideline further inflates the number of people who have died from the Coronavirus. By how much?

Between the nursing home fiasco and the faulty CDC guidelines, I would guess (guess!!) that real coronavirus fatalities are more like 100,000, which is worse than that of the worst modern day American flu season.

What would the death rate have been if we had had timely use of HCQ? I’ll hazard another guess, 60,000.

And where will deaths go from here? I can only hope that the current trend of reduced deaths continues.
