Two Tampa police officers were injured early Saturday after a crowd of hundreds surrounded a group of officers in an "ambush," the Tampa police chief said.
Officers were responding to a report of shots fired and a possible gunshot victim at an intersection near the Ybor City neighborhood around 1 a.m., Chief Brian Duggan told reporters Monday. A crowd of hundreds was at the scene when police arrived.

One officer was hit in the head with an object and suffered a small laceration and swelling, police said. The officer was treated and released from the hospital. A second officer who was hit in the head with a glass bottle is also expected to be OK.
Aerial footage from the scene shows a crowd surrounding officers at an intersection and officials can be heard over audio saying that an officer had been struck with a bottle. At one point, a large group of the crowd can be seen running away down the street.
“There were hundreds of them,” Dugan said, referring to the crowd. “Hundreds. We actually ended up having to call every single police officer that was available that night to respond there, from New Tampa to South Tampa.”
Duggan said that over 100 officers responded to the scene. One person was arrested.

Now places where events like this are likely, inhabitants should expect either no response or a small brigade of LEO’s to show up. Most likely, no response.

Always a problem when policing a bad neighborhood. Police have understood they need to get in and get out fast before the inevitable crowd of bystanders turns ugly on them. Sort of like nation building in Somalia or Afghanistan.

This crap happened in the 1970s, so the police developed an overwatch system, meaning a second group of cops out of sight but ready to swoop in as needed. Combined with counter snipers and Electronic Warfare and Countermeasures (ECW) to locate and identify ring leaders and riot managers, and you are good to go.
Imagine the restraint shown by the ambushed officers.
They could have shot and rammed their way out.
They didn’t.
Time to line the outside of police cars with two rows of Claymore mines.
