"His many personal and professional flaws, including his bankruptcies, sexual scandals, crude and cruel language, repelled me. I saw him as a populist, even a demagogue, who had not prepared for the heavy responsibilities of the presidency," he said in a new book, which was profiled by Paul Bedard in his Washington Secrets column.
Yoo worried, at the time, that Trump would "test, evade, or even violate the Constitution."
Bedard explains, "Over the course of 300 pages comparing Trump moves to the wishes of the Founding Fathers, Yoo discovered that despite constant criticism that Trump was destroying the Constitution, he was actually propping it up and using it to defend the presidency."
"Rather than a sword, the Constitution has become Trumps shield. Even though he had not had any previous government or military office or public policy experience, Trump has defended the constitutional text, structure, and design for an independent, vigorous executive," the professor wrote.

John Yoo is hardly a Trump doubter. He is as red meat conservative as they come.
They already hate Yoo with a burning passion.
The proof is there.
All those, even on this forum, who are screaming for this president to DO SOMETHING with those who are rioting in cities cross this country forget one thing. This POTUS is practicing federalism.
That is the way it was set up by the founders. Dont like it? Then change it. Its called amending the constitution.
Good luck with that.
Doesn’t mean he didn’t have his doubts.
The elected-President Trump is under constant attack from Americas praetorian guard in Washington and the deep state - unelected and self-interested bureaucrats who control the levers of executive power. Can we address how constitutional that is?
Not surprised about John Yoo’s conservatism. Like many in the early days he misread the Trump media persona as the key to Trump the President, it wasn’t. An Andrew Jackson Trump is not. The “populism” is for elections, not for governing.
And he still has a job in berzerklee? Has he been doxxed yet?
But he’s right. I had some doubts i admit re: trump when he first come out. And i do become annoyed with his tweeting. However, i’m pretty certain that when he sends a bombastic tweet it’s a cover for some other activity. At least i hope that’s true. In any case I believe this Mr Yoo is correct. He’s the most constitutionally correct president we’ve had in my lifetime.
At least that we know about.
Did he take the next step, and point out that President Trump stands nearly alone, I mean, apart from The Deplorables?
from the Prop209 keyword:
How in the HELL can a bankruptcy “offend” anyone?
This guy’s a moron.
Possibly he saw them as a way to get out of paying someone their just due?
That’s what bankruptcy laws were written for!!!!
I have said the same thing on various threads here on FR. Too many don’t fully grasp Federalism.
I can remember when anyone who filed a bankruptcy was branded with a scarlet B. Business or personal didn’t matter. Even a business that filed for bankruptcy protection was considered less than desirable to do business with.
That didn’t start changing until sometime in the 1980’s.
“Possibly he saw them as a way to get out of paying someone their just due?”
Assigning that thinking seems to suggest the bankruptcy was purposefully done and not a consequence of a poor business environment.
Trumps businesses are all leisure related and in a recession the very first businesses to suffer are leisure since they receive all their income from the clients discretionary spending and this is the first to stop during financial hard times.
Trump’s bankruptcies happened during financial hard times.
Thanks...
Simple rule about Trump. Watch what he does, not what he says.
Just looking at it through a different view point. We know how some folks see things.
Well, he was. He didn't vote for Trump.
Bet he does this time.
