Major League Baseballs Texas Rangers should change their team name because of its ties to brutality and racism, a Chicago Tribune columnist argued Thursday. Steve Chapman wrote that the Rangers were revered in Texas but the legends omit a lot of the reality. Chapman cites the book Cult of Glory: The Bold and Brutal History of the Texas Rangers by Doug J. Swanson as the main reason for the organization to change the name.

The New York Mets is short for “Metropolitans”, which was a name of a baseball team in New York in the 19th century, if I recall correctly. When the Mets were formed as an expansion team, the name was inspired by that old New York team.
The name Metropolitans is supposed to refer to the New York Metropolitan Area.
Then there are the Los Angeles Kings of the NHL, Sacramento Kings of the NBA, and Kansas City Royals of MLB which suggest imperialism and enslavement by monarchs.
You can’t say bait.
Someone on YouTube comments said that once Rangers used to use Black babies to catch Mexican outlaws...
Who the hell is this ChiCongo person Chapman anyway?
What is rasciss about the term ‘Ranger’?
Why does Chapman think Hispanics consider ‘Ranger’ an affront?
Like was tough in the 1800s. One’s day was filled with all the tasks that were required to survive. Farms and ranches needed tending, tack needed repair, all sort of things filled up each and every day. Crap like we are seeing today was not tolerated back then; no time for it. Miscreants were dealt with swiftly, usually with tar and feathers or a rope and tree.
It really is too bad that many of the looters we see almost daily on TV do not have a date with a rope in their near future.
Metropolitan? A city slicker?
Abbott caved on the mask...so yeah there is a possibility!
And for the global warming crowd, they must be offended by names such as Phoenix Suns, Oklahoma City Thunder, and Miami Heat. All of those names suggest hot weather and extreme weather, which must offend their sensibilities.
Whatever supposed evil can be applied to the Rangers, can easily be applied to the Democrat Party.
Let’s be frank here, Texas needs to break away from the rest of the nation! It doesn’t work anymore... as long as you’ve got these nasty evil liberal cancerous states it will never work..the damage has been done!!
I take great offense that someone from the North has anything derogatory to say about anything historic in Texas. The Rangers got the job done that needed to be done to protect the people of Texas. There is a true saying that it only took one Ranger to take care of a riot. Read the account about Borger, Texas. We still have a unique law group who are Texas Rangers. We may need to have them show the law forces of today how it’s done with the snowflakes out there. There sure wouldn’t be all this burning down of cities and destroying our historical USA sites.
Next the New York YANKEES! Can’t have the other half of the Civil War represented, now, can we?
I read a lot o Louis L’amour books. I think the Texas Rangers have an awesome history.
Well, we all know that the word “lynching” is racist - to people who are themselves racist. It must be terrible to see the whole world through the lens of racism.
I grew up in Georgia where when driving in the country we saw chimneys from homes burned down by the damn Yankees. They need to change their name to something like NY Multis, for multicultural. Maybe the Antifas.
The Texas Bluebells.
Very true. These nicknames which suggest some monarchy or hierarchy must be banned!!
And what about names such as Pittsburgh Pirates, Nashville Predators, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and soon to be Las Vegas Raiders? They all suggest we are endorsing criminal activity.
So long as we can find a Pinochet clone to run things and do proper cleanup
“Is there any sports nickname which is not offensive to someone?”
Well, there are the fearsome Fighting Arugula.
Minnesota Twins have removed their statue of Calvin Griffith, who once admitted that he moved the franchise from DC because Minnesota had more hard-working white people.
The Detroit Lions are an embarrassment to the feline community - I demand a name change!
The Motor City Kitties...
