Texas’ annexation was passed by a coalition of southern Whigs and Congressional Democrats.
The admission of Texas ignited the long simmering border dispute between Mexico and the former Texas Republic.
The not yet famous Whig Congressman Abe Lincoln gave a speech condemning America as immoral for its war with Mexico. Apparently he later changed his mind about both the morality of war and Texas being a state.
