A Manhattan NYPD lieutenant sent an email to his fellow officers apologizing for kneeling alongside George Floyd protesters late last month — telling them that “the cop in me wants to kick my own ass.”
In a June 3 email obtained by The Post Thursday, Lt. Robert Cattani of the Midtown South Precinct said he regrets his “horrible decision to give into a crowd of protesters’ demands” and kneel at Foley Square in Lower Manhattan, with several other cops.
“The conditions prior to the decision to take a knee were very difficult as we were put center stage with the entire crowd chanting,” Cattani wrote. “I know I made the wrong decision. We didn’t know how the protesters would have reacted if we didn’t and were attempting to reduce any extra violence.”

Demote him back to a probationary patrolman.
Its very easy to have a career ending injury out there on the field. A missed block, trip and fall, have some one one trip and fall into you, I am sure Brees and Villaneuva know that and have acted accordingly. A multi-million dollar paycheck is worth some measure of your personal integrity, I guess.
Fire him.
Remove his retirement pay, and any severence pay.
Send a letter to all who remain, and their families, noting the consequences they too will face if they do the same.

Nah. That’s just a bit too extreme. But he should most definitely resign immediately. Because now who would (or should) trust him? Nobody.

Be careful saying that even in jest, assuming you are.
One never knows how close to “wanting to check out” somebody is from within. What you say is your choice.

Let me get this straight—he is apologizing for apologizing?
The other is that the way you apologize for this is by taking a knee again - on a rioter’s neck!
If you fire him, he will simply go to another department and hire on as a lieutenant.
If you keep him on at a probationary patrolman’s position or equivalent, that will be his final rank if he quits, which makes hiring on at a higher rank problematic. His retirement pay and severance pay, if any, will be calculated based on that rank as well. And then all the people he bossed around will now be ordering him around.
Well, you can’t put him on the street, because his fellow officers will never come to his aid if he is in danger...
