A Northern California sheriffs deputy was killed and two law enforcement officers wounded Saturday when they were ambushed with gunfire and explosives while pursuing a suspect, authorities said.
Sgt. Damon Gutzwiller, 38, was shot and killed in Ben Lomond, an unincorporated area near Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz County Sheriff Jim Hart said. A second deputy was injured, and a third officer from the California Highway Patrol was shot in his hand, Hart said. Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Department Sgt. Gutzwiller was a beloved figure here at the sheriffs office, the sheriff said.
Damon showed up today to do his job, to keep this community safe, and his life was taken needlessly, a visibly shaken Hart said.

Dan Noyes 7 hrs · I have new information about the suspect in the death of 38-year-old Santa Cruz County Sheriffs Sgt. Damon Gutzwiller. The Sheriffs Department identified the suspect as Steven Carillo of Ben Lomond. The I-Team has learned he is 32 years-old and an active duty US Air Force sergeant based out of Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield. Sources tell me investigators found many improvised explosive devices inside Carillos home today, and that the FBI has taken over the case. The working theory is the sheriffs deputies interrupted something big that was about to happen. On his Facebook page May 31st, Carillo reposted a meme that said, Ill never let racist white people make me forget about the dope white people I know exist. I love yall. The post includes fist emojis of different skin tones, and both of the whites in the meme were crossed out. Carillo wrote, The only race that matters, the human race. The Sheriffs Department said the incident began when someone called about a suspicious van parked off the road near Jamison Creek, Boulder Creek. The caller saw guns and bomb making materials inside the van. Sheriffs personnel followed the van back to Carillos house on Waldeberg Road in Ben Lomond. They were ambushed with gunfire and multiple improvised explosive devices. Sgt. Gutzwiller was pronounced dead at the hospital. A second deputy was either shot or struck by shrapnel from the explosives Carillo tossed at them. As Carillo drove away, authorities say he hit the deputy with his car. The Sheriffs Department said it appears Carillo then hijacked a car, but was arrested after officers shot him. He was armed at the time. Carillo has two children. His wife, Monika Carrillo, was an Airman 1st Class in the Air Force, but she died in an off-base hotel in South Carolina in 2018. Authorities said at the time her death was not suspicious.

Carrillo is survived by his wife, Monika Carrillo, who was a First Class Airmen in the Air Force, but she died in an off-base hotel in South Carolina in 2018. That's as good as the one about "being attacked by an unarmed man with a knife." (!!)

Apparently his wife was active duty Air Force with the rank of Airman First Class. But reporters are lazy and stupid.

I’ve been a Freeper 20 years and whenever a post about a law enforcement officer killed is made, it never fails that it will bring out at least one cop hater on FR.

This case may be connected to the LEO that was killed in Oakland during the riots. I suspect it is the same white van seen leaving the scene of the crime
