Catholics Fire Back After D.C. Archbishop Attacks Donald Trump......

A number of prominent Catholics have reacted strongly to a statement by Washington, DC, Archbishop Wilton Gregory denouncing President Trump for visiting a shrine to Pope John Paul II.

The former papal nuncio to Washington, Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, went so far as to call Archbishop Gregory a “false shepherd” for his unjust reproach of the John Paul II National Shrine for allowing President Trump to visit.

Edward N. Peters, a well-known Catholic canon lawyer and professor at Sacred Heart Seminary of the Archdiocese of Detroit, tweeted that Gregory’s condemnation is “devoid of any sense of Christian sentiment.”

Brian Burch, the president of CatholicVote, said that Mr. Trump’s visit to the shrine and executive order on religious freedom ought to be “celebrated” rather than condemned.

“It is regrettable that the Archbishop of Washington chose this occasion to engage in a partisan attack on the President, especially when the country is in desperate need of healing and unity,” Burch said in a statement.

“Millions of Catholics in the United States, including many within the Archbishop’s own flock, are grateful for today’s Executive Order,” Burch observes, while the archbishop’s “unfortunate partisan attack needlessly politicizes this important issue, and distracts from the plight of vulnerable religious minorities around the world.”

St. John’s is an Episcopal church across from the White House.
The Catholic National Shrine/Cathedral is located several miles northeast of there.

Today’s “church” is not apolitical.

JP II was very political but in a way that aligned with the Church’s doctrine.

Humans fail unless they are humble and hard working.

Archbishop was not humble or hardworking here.

The Church is full of sinners like him...and I. Some of us are too holy for a Church as weak and strong as Christ.

Stick with the Church fellow sinner, the wolf is voracious out there alone. But smack down the not humble and lazy...our kids and our selves too.

The Catholic Church makes millions of dollars every year bringing people into the country. If course they hate Trump. He’s a Christian, he’s not gay and is trying to keep the invaders out of our country.

My uncle used to open the church and turn the heat on for early mass. He was a bit surprised when the head priest told him he was going to Provincetown for his annual two week vacation.

Interesting back story to the Shrine. It is right next door to the Basilica Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. It was originally builtin 2001 for about $75 million as the JPII Cultural Center - with money from the Diocese of Detroit. It proved to be a financial failure - a complete money pit. It was completely underwater from day one and the maintenance-operation of the building alone was $65,000/month.

In 2011 the Knights of Columbus came to the rescue and bought he place for $22.7 million and made it the JPII Shrine. Big hit to Detroit which has other financial nightmare to deal with these days.

::The Church leaders allow the enemy a foothold in the Church. That does not affect my ability to have a personal Relationship with Jesus, to receive the sacraments and to help where I can.::

Well said. Ditto for me. I will not allow evil men to keep me from my Lord. The Holy Spirit will cleanse his Church and send us once more a good and faithful shepherd.

Prayers up for Holy Mother Church.

But this IS the “reformation.” Splitting and wrecking the Church.

No apologies necessary. This Catholic agrees with you.

I am sick of them, too. But the Holy Spirit will cleanse His Church. Remember, Christ promised that the Gates of Hell would not prevail against His Church. Prayers up.

2 different churches. 2 different faiths.

Monday night he went to St John’s Episcopal Church, across from Lafayette Park, near the White House (the “Presidents Church”)

Tuesday he went with Melania to the Catholic St. John Paul II shrine at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, near Catholic University, a few miles from the White House.

Not sure if Trump is even aware of this, but back in the 80s, John Paul II spoke out very strongly against so-called ‘liberation theology’ which had gained a foothold in the church, especially in Central & South America.
This leftward faction within the church sought to portray Jesus as a revolutionary & intentionally mix communism / socialism into Catholicism’s edict to provide for widows & the poor.

Liberation theology, JPII warned, was a trick to manipulate people into gradually replacing their faith in God with false faith in communism.

So, it seemed prescient that Trump went to the shrine of JPII at this particular time.

Jesus told us “I am the way, and the truth, and the life...”

As we are the Body of Christ, we are the Catholic Church and we need to follow Christ and not the ways of the World.

The Catholic Church is for sinners and saints, as Jesus dealt with and spent time in healing and preaching to those that needed him. So too we keep His commandments by sharing our love of God and neighbor.

We can see the sins and weaknesses in church leadership and members. We can also see the holiness and strengths in church leadership and members. We need to stand for God’s Truth and share our voice and actions to follow Christ’s way. We can respect the office and the person, but not the sin.

It is clear that the ways of the world, secularism, lack of morality, and sinfulness has split our country and the Church and the world. This has taken hold and has led many astray away from the teachings of Jesus.

There is hope as Jesus is merciful and continues to love us.

Let us put our trust in Jesus and continue to hope that he will soon straighten out the Catholic Church so that we can continue bringing the Good News of Salvation to all.

I think we have an irreparable rift between the RCCh (Roman Catholic Church - heretic) and the Faithful Remnant.

Catholicism is the best way to worship Our Lord, but I don’t think I can continue to support the RCCh.
